The main issue, besides the way the emeralds are labeled, is that their polygonal shape isnt really that well defined. they do look quite flat since of of the faces of trhe said emerald should reflect in some degree the light from the lightsource, thus helping in the definition of each shape. while this is not a must, you really need to state that the emeralds are indeed, diamond shaped objects.
saying "every sonic fan would recognize them" its nothing but a bad excuse, specially considering that if you didnt say that they are the chaos emeralds, they could be read as simple jewerly that could easily be labeled like "these are custom colums gems" or anything like that. look at the Emeralds in Sonic Pocket, they are well defined, use way less colors but really achieves the sense of a 3D object and gives them a more dinamic and attractive point of view.

Just change the sheet descriptor.
By the by... Sonic 1 was on the Genesis... And is considered old school Sonic...
Ignoring thae fact that Sonic 2, Sonic Spinball, and other Sonic Genesis games don't actually look like the emeralds you've sprited, as evidenced by your link to the sheet full of them.
Sonic 2 uses the same emeralds just tilted so I see your point but... The majority of Genesis Sonic games(Sonic 1, Sonic 3&K(just an orange emerald instead of a yellow one), Sonic 3D) Use the same shaped chaos emeralds. Sonic Spinball uses (yet again) the same design but tilted on one edge.
Quote: The Chaos Emeralds have gone through various redesigns as the series evolved. At present they are no longer known as the octagonal shape that they were before, and have acquired a more traditional shape of a gem, specifically, brilliant cut.

The chaos emeralds I used as a reference were the S3&K ones and the colours of the Sonic Advance 3 ones.

Lol! Was that so hard? There was a lot of constructive criticism in there. The only thing I don't agree with is you say they look flat. My own opinion was that they were too orb like and not like a cut gem.
My gesture of "any Sonic fan would recognize them" wasn't an excuse for anything. I was simply stating that the sheet is made by a Sonic fan for Sonic fans and that you are obviously not a Sonic fan(or if you are then it is only since the post-Dreamcast era). If a Mario mushroom had the eyes removed you could post it as a "Custom Harvest Moon Poisonous Mushroom" or whatever. There are no "if's", simply plain facts. "If" is hypothetical, we are talking about the sheet as it is and not if I changed the description to "custom colums gems". Chaos Emeralds are Gems, albeit special ones from the Sonic Universe. Take out the Sonic element in even the original Chaos Emeralds and one can assume that even they are just "colums gems".

Except they look a little round...
The original chaos emeralds were round. Up untill S3&K with the introduction of the super emeralds the round emeralds were the norm.
Examples of all the Chaos Emeralds:

Yes the were a bit round I agree, However, they still had a bit of an angle to them on the edges.
your emeralds resemble more of an opal than a emerald. no matter what, every face is always well defined by the lightsource.
someone praising your work =/=understanding.
just a heads up, bro
Ha ha!
Yeah I know. Just it's like before I came here I always got praised for all my spritework. Coming here its like a new level and having someone praise my work is like being given a hand up a small cliff, understanding that you need a small extra hand to help you reach the top of the mountain.
Yes, that is true, but not all praise comments are real, or made by good people. This is not the case, but it's always good to be warned about this

humans can be evil confusing things...
Anyhow, can this be moved to the custom submissions folder, oh great Grooveman.exe in the sky?
They look too simple, and your colors are way too saturated.

Thats the style.
The colours are supposed to be like that.
Made some shading adjustments. How they look now?
