It is currently 550x400, but it's not too late to change it.

I think 640x480 is a good idea.
i personally lyk the duck hunt stage - its simple yet effective, good work
A duck hunt stage would be enjoyable. Ducks pass by, if you hit them the dog pops up with the duck in his hand. If you dont he comes and laughs.
Maybe you can use KO'd Ducks as throwing items if you grab it before the dog, or knock it out of his hands. And maybe from time to time the target marker could follow a player and try to shoot them.
I think we have enough suggestions to maybe pick at least a few new stages by now. Just sayin'.
We should calculate how many stages each franchise is going to have. Then we can narrow them down.
Like say Mario has four stages. We pick the four most favored stage selection for Mario.
I have another idea... Why not do a Nazo no Murasamejou's stage?
The characters might fight in the street and can be in the trees. In the background is a big castle and some towers... Definitely, a japanese style's stage.

Edit: I never have played DK's game. But the stage 'DK's Tree House' is so beautiful. I like it ^^ What game is from the stage?
I approve of the Duck Hunt suggestion.

I say we should be able to kill the dog, he's annoying.
I'm going to offer a suggestion for all of you regarding SMRPG:
Tell me what you think.
You should describe how it will work.
Well, here are the specs:
BG Layer 1 : Main Stage
BG Layer 2 : Far off Towers and Exor
BG Layer 3 : Sky
BG Layer 4 : Tower Overlay (this ensures that the characters are obtructed by the portculis design of the towers)
Mode 7 Layer : Chandelier (sways back and forth liesurely)
Sprites : Chandelier's chain links, Smithy's cape animation, effects for these four random attacks as cast by Exor - Corona, Dark Star, Aurora Flash, Static E, and Daimond Saw
BG Animations: Upper Left Tower Window glows, Chandelier candles flicker
In detail:
The stage only has three major platforms. The towers on either side and a chandelier in the center which is very unstable.
Striking the chain of the chandelier will eventually cause the chain to break and cause the players to plummet.
The chandelier regenerates after a given amount of time.
Exor will periodically cast one of five specials:
Daimond Saw, which when cast, summons two whirling saws of daimond that start at Exor's face and zero in on the present location of each player. The player can avoid them by simply jumping as they connect, but it is impossible to tell which player the saws will focus on at that moment and what speed they will come on screen.
Corona, when cast, a small ball of yellow light will make its way to the center of the screen and perform massive energy sweeps across the stage. If the player does not dodge these, then he can be easily smashed off screen.
Dark Star causes a large black star to fall from above and start jumping all over the stage. The attack ends if it drops off screen.
Aurora Flash causes all players to fall asleep though not always.
Static E will cause a screen wide shock. This can only be avoided by guarding as the screen dims before the attack is unleashed.
Really, that sounds like it could work much better as an actual boss.
Aren't we already having a Bowser Castle stage anyway?
Ahem, I propose that the following franchises should have this many new stages:
Mario: 4
Donkey Kong: 2
Zelda: 3
Metroid: 2
Kirby: 2
Star Fox: 2
Pokemon: 3
F-Zero: 2
Mother: 2
Fire Emblem: 2
The rest of the franchises should only have one stage.
