How about:

World Stage
Basically a flat stage, which is the base of the entire stage. However, depending on what song gets played, the stage changes shape and theme. The songs picked are all based on Nintendo songs or third party songs, just to keep it simple.

Anyway, perhaps to make it even interesting, in the background there are three dancers, dancing in sync with the music. While it might be very hard to pull this one off, depending on what music format you use, it might just as well be as easy. When using WAV or MP3, it's common practice to just split the song in small segments of a few beats, mostly four, eight or sixteen.

Don;t know how to pull that off, but that'd be awesome Smug
Maybe as a modification of that, the stage could have something to do with Rhythm Heaven? Sounds like a good idea, though.
Or, you know, Elite Beat Agents? As in, "the world's a stage", and "saving the world by rocking out"?
I was thinking of a guitar hero stage, Like Metallica's. James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillio play in the background, their songs "Enter Sandman", "Master of Puppets", "One", and "All Nightmare Long", and maybe "For Whom the Bell Tolls". as they play, the stage changes, (note they are in the background) like Marths/Ike's in Brawl, from one place to play the game, to another. like from the Meadowlands, to the final stage, the one where they play "The Thing that Should Not Be", with the huge Eye ball in the background, in the snowey area, and maybe like one or two more stages. Of course we don't have to go with it, since not everyone likes Metallica, or metal music, but since you guys were thinking of the song stages, I thought I would post mine.

Guitar Hero isn't Nintendo.

I know, but they had Guitar Hero games on Wii, from World Tour, to Van-Halen. Also neither is Sonic, or Snake. but like I stated, it was just a thought.
That World stage sounds kinda hard we'd have to put in a buncha stages in one.

My idea? If so, I now, it would be hard, but IF we do do something like this, then maybe only one of those stages....
@koopaul, it'd be pretty much like the Pokemon Stadium stages.

Personally, I think Rhythm Heaven would be a more likely choice. Or Donkey Konga (where the stage's platforms' movements coincide with the drum beats).

EBA could work, but I prefer RH...
Also, I don't think Guitar Hero would very likely.
Yeah even the Pokemon Stadium might be hard to do. I can foresee many problems making transforming stages.

Obviously I'm not making the engine so I can't be 100% sure, but using the same transforming scheme as the rest of the Smash Bros. series it should be relatively easy. That is, stretching the transforming part into the static part of the stage, removing it, loading the next part flattened, and then stretching it out to normal size. Another Smash Bros. style stage transformation would be the stage swap in SSBB's Fire Emblem level where the whole thing faded to black for a second besides the players and temporarily placed a line of collision in the middle of the stage until the next part loaded.
I'm not sure, but I think he was talking about the spriting requirements. The actual coding likely wouldn't be hard at all.
I have three new ideas for stages: the first is from Pokémon World (Heart Gold and Silver Soul), the second from Mario World (A remix between Mario Kart and Mario Bros.) and the third from Kirby (The mirror maze?)

Legendary Shrine (Pokémon HeartGold and SilveSoul)
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/1109/hni0072.jpg

This stage looks like Mushroomy Kingdom; are two stages in one. Sometimes the game will load 'Tin Tower', the place where Ho-Oh lives. When you are in this stage, you can fight in the roof of the tower and in the indoor of the tower. In the background you can see Johto.

But other times the game will load 'Whirl Islands', the place where Lugia lives. I've invented that a old civilization live here for a thousands of years, but one day a seaquake destroyed all. When you are here, you can fight on the rocks, the floor and the central ruin.

Bowser Castle
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/2432/hni0074.jpg

Welcome to the Bowser Castle! It's a simple stage. The place where you fight is the principal castle door (Which is the Bowser's face -Mario Kart-). You can see the throne room indoor. Maybe fire columns will appear in the sides of the principal platform.

Mirror maze/labyrinth

A simple stage bassed in a game of Kirby.

If you need, I'll paint red lines to mark the platforms. Do you like some stage?
The Mirror Maze Hub is a good idea. Maybe we could make it floating like the Fountain of Dreams. As for Bowser's Castle, I think it needs some tweaking. It'd be nice to have lava and the Clown Car as a platform.
The Pokemon stages are interesting. Maybe we could combine the ideas and have a Ho-oh vs Lugia setup?
