You had a single line of the lightest shade back there, which looked terrible. And the darker stuff on the very top doesn't work. Sun =/= below.
For direction it pretty much depends on the pose and symmetry. Those such as Link with symmetry issues will need edits for the opposite direction regardless. It might look nicer if we included both directions instead of looking lazy. It really will just be flipping and editing. So in reality it's not that hard for both directions.

Used your version, and tried to smooth out the shades a little bit,

Not bad, but the problem with that is that it's probably too quick of a transition from the lightest shade to the second darkest.
With that I'm done with Mario now, you all decide what you like.
But uh, I have a bit of homework to do, so I'll get to Bowser a bit later tonight...
I think that Mario looks amazing, though the left (our right) hand could be worked on a bit.
You know if you keep copying Mario over and over his colors are going to get darker. I suggest someone should store a pallet of Ridge's first edit.
I suggest we get a general palette going anyway.
I can't say I'm fond of that Bowser. Have we decided on remodeling Bowser to look more like he does in Mario games?
Anyway I sorta started over your sprite there...
What do you think? Kinda crappy which is why I stopped but meh... It gives you an idea.

...I'm still pretty shitty with colors (Or at least Blues)...And I'm not sure, but I think I may have gone a little overboard shading...
I like 2B.

For example, Samus and Link both have issues with left hand/right hand, not to mention most of the character's poses are not exactly the same when facing different directions.
So, when the character is facing the opposite direction, are we just going to flip the sprite? Or do we want to sprite both directions?
Honestly, I'm fine with flipping the characters unless they are known to have differences, like Samus/Megaman/Link. I'll let others weigh in though.

Yeah, I personally think he should look more like he does in Mario games.
So do we want a cartoony, game-inspired Bowser, or a more realistic Smash-style Bowser? Or maybe some kind of medium? I think Koopaul's is an example of the first option. Wes's seems to be the third.

Well that's the thing, I was basing him off of SSB, where he is hunched more. but this style is using brighter colors, so in that aspect I based him off of the Mario games. but I like what you did there. I'm working on a update that addressed all of Ridge's crits. Although, since it's a group project, the decision isn't really up to me.
I think Bowser should be a combination of both Mario and SSB styles.
@JoshR, Squirtles 2 and 3 B are both the best.
I think he should keep the hunched over SSB look, but I tried making his details more like the games. Which means less detail in his muscles. Although koopaul's attempt's face looks scrunched up, like mine originally did. People told me to change that, so I'm a little conflicted on the face area. Oh well. Newest is top right.
I hate to sound like a broken record but (now I have no problem with hunched but) his shell should be lower. Even when it's high it doesn't go into his head like that. And looking at it again it goes too low as well. And the lump in the shells border? In the BIS one it's the hole where his arm comes out and it's a lot smoother, in yours it's halfway down his back. :\
It's in that position because I originally put it there when the head was 3/4 and I forgot to change it. I guess I just didn't notice it. Did someone crit on that already though? I don't remember reading it, so why would you osund like a broken record?
Also what do you guys think of the new muzzle/belly pallet? I hard a hard time making the contrast the right level to fit the style without making the the same color as the yellow skin.
