But see that's the point. Its a lot easier edit and resize a sprite with few colors and fix it up later then to resize and edit a detailed sprite because of all the different colors you'd have to deal with. There's nothing wrong with using a lot of colors, but since you're likely going to have to change the sprites later its better to keep it simple for your sake and add in details later that fit the style.

What I meant was that if we're making a sprite that requires 8 or more
different colors, 8 won't be possible. A better limit for now would be the number of shades rather than color count. Which it seems most people are liking one standard color accompanied by 2 darker shades.
Okay I see what you're saying. Three shades or less sounds fine and a better limit than 8 colors total.
The less shades. The easier it is kinda.
Also it may be easier to sprite the characters to.
just wanted to get other peoples opinions on this:
I like the style. The pose needs some work however. I vote this.
Ooo very nice but something just doesn't seem very Marioy...
You don't mind if I edit it? ... I'm gonna do it anyway.
There we go. Not bad when we work together?
I like that. The hand in the back needs to be remade, and the stance overall doesn't exactly look quite as supportive as it should.
Yeah I just did the face.
I'm loving this. It looks great and doesn't look difficult to do, either.
1. Nin + Koop (excuse abbreviations if you don't like)
2. Nin + Koop + Me
3. Nin + Koop + Me + Attempt at Realistic Pose
Feel free to do better, because I know that I'm not capable of comparing to you guys.
i like this because joe still fits in and its kind of actually more visually pleasing than the old one.
I really like this style as well.
Though as far as this particular sprite goes, I think it needs some work. It doesn't look quite enough like Mario, mainly the face. Shading could use some major improvement.
Also second one's pose is better.
