I might remind you that the point of this is to make a sprite based on certain limitations, and considering these limitations(in this case size) he has to put readbility over anything else. as long as you can identify the character the work is done. not to mention this isn't silent hill, its zelda. not even the original reference is "that" scary. now i really see why everyone considers you an idiot.

okay dude listen its an edit from the stalfols sprite from minish cap stalchilds have bigger heads then the stalfolos do therefore I gave it a bigger head , If you think you can do it bettergo right ahead and give it a try ,and like digitamer metaru said it zelda not silent hill the character i made was only scary when i was like 8 playing zelda
sooo does anyone have any real things that need fixed im working on the walking animations so you guys can see how it looks and im working on the side view to make the cheek bones look a little better
ok, now I can see why digitamer metaru shouldn't have a good rep. and I didn't say it was silent supposed to be like silent hill, and anyway, stalfos and stal child have the same size head, they just have different shapes. OK silent hill is not what I was going for, I meant scary as in a little spooky, sorry about that. anyway, I'm gunna go ahead (no pun intended) and fix your head, if you noticed I made the eyes look more like the ref.

stal childs dont have bigger heads than stalfos the jaw is missing, which is probably why it looks bigger, and the stalfos is taller as well, but ah well, work offa this if you want to keep your sprite as short as it was, only with some of the improvments I suggested, I dont want to start a fight, but I'm trying to help you make your sprite better.
I'm not up to animating it for you though, lol
Dude that sprite wit hthe bigger head looks way worse, the nhow it was before.
The one with the bigger head is the 'before' lolz, anyway, there's more than just the head edited, and mine looks WAY more like the ref he put out, the eyes are obviously not that evil-looking, like his made it out to be. anyway, I fixed the teeth and kept the 'stubby'-ness of his sprite, but made minor modifications, so erm, yeah, you like MINE better than HIS, lol, priceless. I dunno, but it seems you ought to check your spelling a little more, XD
To me, you just made it darker, a bit fatter and the head edit.
And without counting the simple color edits.

Sorry bnewton, but I actually have to say that I like D.moffett's more than your edit. The new eyes don't look at all like the ref, and I think that moffett's have more character, and besides, yours don't follow the style here(which I'm assuming from the looks is Minish Cap/FSA/Very similar style, sorry if that is a bad assumption). Also, if you were going to make the head smaller you shouldn't have just shortened it a couple pixels and left it to look like a ball. And on an off note, Metaru totally deserves his rep.

Now I'll turn my attention back to the topic at hand. Moffett, I'll start MY crits at the top. bnewton was right that your head IS very tall, and shrinking it a little would help, although not as radical as bnewton's edit, maybe just a couple of pixels. Also, shift the eyes up a pixel or two, see how they look there, as that's where I see them on the ref.
A quick fix, the dot nose looks odd, especially when the ref has a triangle slot like a skull does for the nose. No biggie here.
Now, the teeth look to be really hard to get right, what with the action of the rib cage going on beneath it. I recommend actually breaking the teeth into two pixel segments instead of one pixel ones. The ref's teeth are split up generally into pairs of connected teeth, so I recommend that the pattern of pixels look like this:
|..|..|..|etc. where lines are black pixels and dots are white pixels. This allows the stark white of the teeth to stand out better and increases the readability.
The way I see it, I think that you barely have to show the rib cage at all. The point of view of minish cap makes it so that the head should block out most of the visible rib cage, which should be about the same length as the skirt. We might see just the base of the rib cage going into the skirt.
While the legs are also the same length as the skirt and rib cage, the skirt would cover them at this angle, but we should see at least a bit of them before it transitions into the feet. Like someone said before, it looks Kirby-ish.
Now, so this doesn't feel like a pile of complain complain complain, there are some things I do like about the piece. If the piece does call for the ribs to be visible, you've sprited them pretty nicely, they communicate well. Also, I really like the placement of the arms, they look they would fit well into the game.

If you disagree(or, Metaru, if YOU disagree), go ahead and say so. Knowing what I'm critting badly also helps me, so go ahead. And I'm aware that saying all these crits makes me sound arrogant, I don't intend it that way. Good luck on the sprite, it's looking good.
bad eye crit on your parts, the original head looks NOTHING like the ref, I fixed that, and made the legs darker to make it a little more like it's a leg and not a white foot ending in two red claws, and I think l..l..l..l counts as buck teeth,I didn't make the thing fatter either, the body just transitions like that, and no, the skull isn't a ball, it's a smaller blob of what he had in the first place, and your Ego is WAY too big (pun intended) anyway, edits do fit the style, anyway, I made the teeth look as small as they should, sort of a one row dither lol,and, WRONG! the teeth are NOT stark white, my edit makes the eyes look plenty like the ref (red dots in a black circle, not evil eyes), so, merry learning how to crit! lol

you are not even making as much sense you think your trying to get at compared to Ego (which I can agree with).

Um, yeah, bnewton, that was kind of unnecessary. Aside from the generally helpless crits of MY crits, that "Ego" jab was unwarranted. I'm trying to be civil towards you. Maybe YOU should learn to crit.

Also, Metaru, that looks great! Although, yeah, legs & skirt don't read so well, otherwise it is excellent. I was taking a shot at it, but yours puts mine to shame.

I was just screwing around, and I think I made a good enough head, but the skirt & legs are really tough. I also took the eyes straight off the Stalfos to see how they look.

Also, thank you Drew. BTW, the Michael Jackson in your sig is very creepy.
is it just me or is moffett the only one who seems to really understand that these sprites aren't suppose to be facing the camera? Like some of the edits do look prettier but moffett's (to me anyway) is the only one that actually looks like he's facing downwards, because don't forget this is a "birds eye point of view" game and if he were facing the camera then he'd probably be lying on his back or just looking up into the sky.
you got a point. i think i totally forgot that on my version. specially in the way i made the eyes.
I was trying to get it, and I think if I moved the eyes back down on the skull a bit it would read a little better. The eyes themselves, the arms, and the feet of mine all come directly from the stalfos themselves, so I think it was more of a positioning problem than anything on mine at least. However, I concede to your point.

Also, Metaru, a small detail I noticed was that the ref has the triangle-ish nose, not two dots. I think I said something about this earlier, but yeah, minor detail.
