Bean, Ray, Mighty, Bark, do any of these names ring a bell?
These are all characters that are underused, and unappreciated.
Maybe not Mighty or Ray, but Bean and Bark were both in Sonic Fighters.
That being, creating a moveset would be a lot easier then most Sega
characters.
These characters haven't gotten any game time in years, maybe its time to
bring one back?

I wish there was a de-thank button.
Eh, that I'm not so sure of.
In the case of characters that are possibly obscure to most players in Smash Brothers, let's look at the actual game, and this hypothetical case of those Sonic characters:
In the actual Smash Bros, let's consider ROB, Pit, and the Ice Climbers to be more on the obscure side. Sure, there are people who know everything about every character in Smash Bros, but others, particularly younger gamers, probably have never seen or never heard about some or all of those characters unless they were incredibly obsessive gamers. In the case of all three, they were earlier projects in Nintendo's history of video games, and thus cherished by the creators of the game. Also, in the case of all three, they were the stars or title characters of their respective games.
The characters like Mighty, Ray, Bean and Bark are perhaps a little TOO obscure, and not only that, they are not the lead characters in their respective series. They also have very few appearances, meritting belief that they are not loved as much as the main characters by the players, but maybe even the creators as well. Even me, with a considerable amount of dorky, useless knowledge, only can remember half of those four characters without seeing a picture of them.
I'm hardly a primary contender in saying who gets put in what, but based on what I've described, you're probably not gonna see a whole lot of support for obscure character appreciation. You'd more likely see Robotnik before seeing one of them, and admit it, that would be pretty awesome too.
But here's the thing, Smash Brothers is a franchise about Nintendo characters beating the crap out of each other. Thus, obscure Nintendo characters are fair game. The likes of Sega or Konami characters appearing are just little special additions. Why go with obscure characters for companies that aren't originally intended to be in the game? They didn't choose Snake or Sonic because they're obscure, quite the opposite. Snake and especially Sonic are video game powerhouses. They're top tier characters in the world of video games. There's no such thing as another top tier Sega character that isn't one of the main Sonic characters as well. Anybody else from Sega's line-up would be too obscure for the average gamer and definently too obscure for a character who wasn't even intended to be in the game in the first place. I know, Marina is too obscure as well, I dunno why she was choosen. I know we are not Nintendo and we could add Master Cheif, Naruto and Mr. Clean if we wanted to, but to some extent, we have to at least be a bit realistic. Sega has no one of any other importance to video games. It's just, Sonic, his gang and then a bunch of C-List characters that occasionally get together to play Tennis.

You know you want it.
Robotnik would actually be pretty cool, but maybe something like an assist trophy. He could come in his little circular ship, and throw badniks onto the field, and then fly away laughing. You can kill the badniks with just 1-2 jumps, or something
I really want to see NiGHTS in this, somehow. I actually see a moveset for him.
at least as an assist trophy

Sorry but No.
We said that Robotnik or "Eggman" would be a boss in Adventure mode. Also Tonberry already made the roster, the only characters we are focusing on putting in are A Konami character, a Fire Emblem character, and one more 3rd Party Character. We already said Tails was popular enough to be a 2nd Sega character for the game.
I believe my previous post said to stop argueing.
Sorry didn't see it. I'll try not to.
okay, seriously, why are you guys just ignoring everybody who said having tails makes no sense?
How does he make no sense? There have been other posts saying that he's the only second Sega character that DOES make sense.
Maybe it makes no sense to have a second SEGA character period.
Er... Sorry...
it makes no sense because we're using someone who is, by definition, a sonic clone (though i admit it wouldn't be hard to construct him differently) when sega has hundreds of other iconic and much more original characters, not to mention that in no other 3rd party have we used two characters from the same frachise.
I always thought everyone would agree on a third-party roster like:
-Snake
-Sonic
-Mega Man
-Bomberman
-Pac-Man
-Geno (yes he's third-party)
-I geuss Marina
-and uh... Someone else that everyone loves.
That's got the mascot character of all the best third-party companies with a good relationship with Nintendo.
I would likely guess Saki or a Gunstar would technically represent Treasure better than Marina would. Actually a Gunstar would be fun to play as...
Also, if you were the one making Pacman's moveset, I could probably agree with him, too.
As for Tails, I really don't know enough about the Sonic series to be able to say yes or no to him...
