Koopaul's actually got a decent third party lineup there, but really it comes down to a matter of opinion(s). With the current lineup the way it is now, it's got room for 2 characters from several of the third parties, which is okay. Personally, if Nintendo did it, I think they'd limit it to one character per party, but Nintendo's not running the show here.

So if up to 2 characters per 3rd party remains the norm, Tails is actually a decent choice for Sega. Tails didn't get on my nerves until he opened up his fuzzy little mouth. Annoying brat... It's not devastatingly hard to give him a moveset that keeps him from being a "Sonic clone", which I don't think he was set up to be in the first place, and if he even shared one move with Sonic, it could be tweaked to act differently.

HOWEVER, on the other side of that, take into consideration that, even though the other 3rd parties are featuring up to 2 characters, take into consideration the fact that as of now, the characters in those parties aren't from the same franchise. Sonic and Tails are, and that is where I think some of the resentment comes from.

While on this note, although the thought should probably be in a topic other than Tails', if Marina and Kosmos aren't liked enough by all, why not add in Saki and Pacman, or some combination like that. Sure, it kinda throws a wrench into the current roster, but Konami's getting two, Sega's getting two, Capcom's getting two (I think.. Viewtiful Joe is in the roster, yes?), so it wouldn't be so farfetched for those other 3rd Parties to get two.

I don't even know what I was rambling about anymore... Tails, keep your mouth shut and you can be on my team, okay? If you talk I'll staple your lips shut.
Pac-Man has hardly been relevant since 1982. He's a gaming icon, sure. But he's a gaming icon as the little circle with a mouth, not the thing with arms, legs and ears we have today.

Also, Tails has never really been a Sonic clone. Sure, he runs along side him and does the same thing, but he's always been different. He's slower, he can fly, he can swim and they developed him further into his own character in all the 3D Sonic outings. Aside from Eggman, Tails is the next biggest Sonic character, he's easily recognizable and a bigger Sega icon than any other possible choice.

"You can all go fuck yourselves."
SERIOUS POST - I believe Knuckles is a better choice than Tails because he has way more potential for a movelist, it's WAY easier to come up with one since he has fists, and he's off-and-on Sonic's "rival" not counting that twat Shadow. Why pick the hero and his partner to fight each other when you can pick the hero and his rival to fight each other?

Also Knuckles is way more badass and isn't an annoying prick. This much you know to be true and if you disagree YOU'RE A sir.

hyperbole, the horror! anyway, i understand that tails is very different from sonic, but he was originally a sonic who could fly in sonic 2. i just think that it would be way cooler to have someone like vectorman or billy hatcher who people would still recognize without pointlessly jerking off the sonic franchise when it doesn't deserve it
I agree with everything in Tyvon's post.
In my honest opinion, I think the Sonic series really does deserve another character. It's one the only series to actually 'survive' since it's been created, like Mario and some of Nintendo, and is closely related to the Mario series. If I recall, I think Mario was the reason why the series was created in the first place.

I really wanna keep Tails in first and foremost, to preserve my position on this. The only other characters that be eligible would be AiAi, NiGHTs, and Billy, with Billy making the most since as a Smash fighter. Though the way I see it, Billy could be either a Yoshi clone or utilize the animals that hatch from the eggs, but either way, not having a "Final Smash-worthy" attack (that I know of anyway).

As far as other Sonic characters, I'd pick (if not Tails):
- Knuckles: Pretty much what Number Six said. Seems like he was made for this.

OR

-Metal Sonic: Although he's literally a Sonic clone, he could be original as long as we take full advantage of the fact that he's a machine. As for personal reasons, he's the "original rival" and came before Knuckles. I also think it'd be cool if Sonic's long-time rival could combat with one of Mario's (DK or Bowser) Genki ^_^ lol

But anyway, I was thinking Tails's jump should have a number somewhere in between Kirby's and Pit's jumps. Or make his Up+B like Pit's (the difference being that you have to tap the B button to go higher and his tails hurt if you touch them) and just give him 3 extra jumps like Pit.

His Down+B could the Spin Dash, naturally, but maybe with different attack properties from Sonic; to make it more combo-friendly for Tails's gameplay like Sonic's was for him.

I think Neutral+B could be the Rhythm Badge from Sonic Adventure, or the Arm Cannon from Sonic Battle.

I don't know what to do for Tails's Side+B, but what could be done is to give Sonic's Side+B from Brawl to him and give Tails a different Down+B, like one of the Neutral+Bs stated above or the ChuChu rocket bomb from Sonic Battle.

Final Smash could consist of the Tornado, Super Tails, or his mech from SA2 (The Tornado 2, I think).
-Super Tails more than likely won't happen. As he'd just be another Super Sonic with minor differences.

-The Tornado would be the obvious choice, but I think it would be bit like other Final Smash ideas we had for other characters (Falco's Arwing, Bowser Jr.'s Ship, Ridley's Air Attack thing from Super Metroid and Brawl). I really don't remember the other ideas we had or the one's we had for the Tornado, though, so I'll leave that on the table =)

-Tails's mech would be an excellent Final Smash. You'd be able to move freely and hover, but you could also use the power ups from the 2P mode in SA2 or when fighting Tails/Eggman as a boss, like the Homing Missiles and the Laser Cannon. Of course, in order for this not to be cheap, there'd have to be limits as to what attacks you could do.

-The Laser Cannon (Down+B) automatically eliminates your Final Smash after use. No power ups can be used before this attack.
-The Homing Missiles (Up+B) can be used twice before the FS ends.
-I forgot the weakest one, but that can be used to an even lesser extent.
-There'd also be a time limit in case no one uses the power-ups.
-Tails still gets hurt, but doesn't flinch. Much like Giga Bowser. However, extensive damage could eliminate the mech, and therefore the FS.
-The propeller attack can be used for close range.

And lastly, sorry for the long post Genki ^_^" lol
I think Knuckles is a great idea, honestly. The only thing that stopped me from using him and not Tails is that Tails is simply higher in the pecking order. If we can utilize Tails in a good way somewhere else in the game, I'm all about Knuckles being playable.
Tails and mechs for Assist Trophy. The mech he chooses is random, so there could be any of these effects;

Plane - fly across the screen, dropping bombs that are probably about similar in effect to Link's bombs. If a player gets hit by the vehicle, they take damage.
Walker - Someone else come up with this, I haven't played Sonic Adventure 2 Battle in a long time. Probably the laser cannon, so it'd have an effect like Suicune.
Others - etc

and Knuckles for playable.

fuck you tyvon >: (

but yeah, I guess playing as Knuckles would rock ass.

That's why I intend to keep him in spirits with his classic ways. His arms and legs would disappear for various moves. His specials would be based on chomps and bites rather than Pac-Man World attacks. I would avoid those.

Also you must know even back in 1982 he had arms and legs in his official art.
I don't foresee many people playing as Pac-man even if we included him as a playable character. :/
Hm hm? Why not? There are many people who play as characters simply because they are good fighters. As much as I love Mario I can't play as him at all. Some characters I play as simply because they fit my style.

I'm sure there are MANY Game & Watch fans because of Melee and Brawl and they would have hated that character otherwise.

I agree with this post.
Pac Man, since his inception, has done one thing; eat. Sure, he's gotten a couple spinoffs, but none of them are particularly noteworthy. There is literally nothing that Pac Man can bring to the table. Sure, he's an icon, but that's all he is.
