I couldn't decide if I wanted to have Ness or Lucas as the starter. What do you think?
Lucas instead of Ness. Scratch that, Ness and Captain Falcon both being non-unlockable hearkens back to Melee, keep it this way. Looks perfect, as far as I can tell. 27's kind of a strange number to begin with, though...

K my attempt at a starting roster:
Changes
1. Made Dedede a hidden character. He should have been a hidden character in Brawl, but wasn't. Also, all the other franchises with four characters have two starters, two hidden.
2. Made Lucario a starter simply because Mario and Pokemon both have six characters, but Pokemon had four hidden while Mario only had three. Seems a bit odd to me. Jigglypuff, Deoxys and Mewtwo should definently be hidden so Lucario was the only other choice.
3. Made Lucas a starter because, like I said, the franchises with four characters had two starters, two hidden. Plus, this will get people who don't know curious as to whether or not other Mother characters are hidden in there somewhere.
4. Made Sonic a hidden character because he's fucking Sonic in a Nintendo game. Left Snake as a starter simply to show "HEY LOOK GUYS, THIRD PARTIES!!!"
Also thought about switching Ike with Marth since imo that's how it shoulda been to begin with. But I didn't cause I don't think that would be well received.

Isa has all of Saki's abilities and a sort of a backpack gear that levitates him on the air. And yes, he does have a Ruffian form too (the plot of S&P2 is essentially the same)
This is how he looks like.
Also, I was thinking that we could have some more starters. At least one more line of five characters, like Isaac/Isa/Ray MK-III (two of these three), the Villager, Lucas (I think both Lucas and Ness should be starters, come on, three secret characters for Mother?) and Marth/Goroh/Jigglypuff (I always thought Jiggs fitted better as a starter). The starter list has way too few new characters in.

Again, you know where I stand, but I have to admit that's a pretty solid starting roster, so I'm cool with this.
EDIT:
I'd also say I'm against newcomers in the starting roster, but then I can't really complain since Brawl had a good chunk of it's newcomers in the starting roster.

I think Little Mac and Starfy are fair as starters as Brawl introduced Olimar and Pit as starters, and they were from new franchises to the series. Besides, there's still plenty of hidden newcomers, only those two as starters.

Iirc Pit's game came out on the NES, his game isn't exactly new to the series

I meant to the Smash Bros series. Kid Icarus wasn't in Melee or 64

I put G&W there cause I couldn't think of anyone else. Also cause he'll most likely be in a lot o Demos.

I'd say Falco should be a starter since we have two other secret Fox characters. And I think Marth should be there too seems silly the original hero is secret and not the other guys.

My hand at it.
-Reformatted for width, as to have the player cards fit below it.
-Skewed format is simply a personal flavor, but it works just as fine as a proper rectangle.
-First and Third rows are starting characters.
-Second and Fourth rows are secret characters.
-Original and Melee secret characters still retain their status as secret characters.
-Third-party characters are not starting characters.
-Geno moved to Mario section because it seemed to fit better.
-Lucario promoted to starting character as Mewtwo is making a return.
-Fox remains the single starting character for his game series.
-Masked Man made a starting character because it seemed a bit odd to have both villains as secret characters. Decided to have group the different pairs of characters together.

Roster looks fine to me (besides Klonoa)
But for Ekoi's set-up, maybe switch Falco and Dedede since 3 starters and 1 unlockable seems a bit uneven, same with 1 starter 3 unlockables.
Having Ness and Captain Falcon as unlockables makes no sense anymore.
Maybe the same for Luigi, but considering that he, unlike Ness and Captain Falcon, was never a starter in any of the three games, it could be kept as tradition.
Also, what Angelglory said.

What?
Luigi, Jigglypuff, Ness, and Captain Falcon have always been secret characters. You never started with any of them in any of the three games.
Melee would like to have a word with you.

Uh... Damn... I hate to do this uhh... Geez...
But I think we should replace Waluigi with another Wario character. "WTF Koopaul!"
I know I know. But its not what you think it has to do with the Wario series as a whole.
You see having Waluigi sorta supports the idea that Wario is JUST another Mario character, and that he doesn't have his own series and characters. Which of course is not true, Wario does have his own games and characters galore.
But the fact that we chose Waluigi makes it seem like he doesn't, and only Wario's presence in the Mario games count. Like we only know Wario from the Mario series and nothing else.
(and it doesn't help that we're using Overalls Wario as his icon either)
You see in the games that Waluigi is in Wario is not the star he's a part of the supporting cast just like Waluigi is.
We need characters that belong to Wario and Wario alone they are not shared by Mario.
Someone suggested Ashley from Wario Ware and Captain Syrup was also considered. Those gals represent Wario's series.
I have no problem with the character Waluigi himself, its just what he represents. Waluigi represents that Wario ONLY belongs to Mario and is NOT his own character.
