I'm going to come up with some sort of art style for this soon, I'd prefer if nobody messed with that kind of shit yet.

The card should be about 210 x 260 pixels or around that. Mario stance should just be able to fit in the card. Making mario the same pose as in the game is prefered because there is a reference. If you find a better pose you like and can make, show the community and we can vote on it. Work on the card first, then mario. If someone could help make the card icons and text after ICEMAN's card has been approved by the community, that would be very nice. I will work on the project too whenever I have free time.
* Once you guys have made the sprites, send it over to me because i can easily make copies of them with a different color scheme. Thanked by: Iceman404

The only relevant content in your post is the card size. Everything else is fodder.
Besides, we should be focusing on the characters right now. There's no game without characters.

Maybe when the card shows up, it shows the character and then the character moves, (EX: Walking, Running, Attacking) Just like in SSB64.

That's a good idea!!! Although, doing a good quality stance, some good quality animations to go with it, and doing it for all the characters would take a lot of time. We only have a few people working on the card project. The majority is working on the characters.... but we'll see.

Personally I think for the large character portraits we should have something less pixelated, like a drawing. If we just have an enlarged sprite then it completely throws of the style.

Actually, thats a good point. Are they going to be hi-res then, if thats the case?

We want to keep with the style of the game, so we... draw it? :I Besides, a hi-res drawing on top of a sprite border (i.e. the card) will look incredibly awkward.
I think what DanKen means is that we shouldn't take a small sprite and stretch it out all pixely. Am I right? So are we deciding to do a pixelart type of character portrait? If you guys are considering a cartoon like portrait filled with all gradients, please reconsider...
Alpha Six is right about the hi res portrait looking awkward. Making the character card smooth and not so flashy would be a good combo with the hi res portrait.

i dont think hi res would look awkward, most 2d rpgs do it that way

Yes, but those usually have enough hi-res elements to balance it out, or they actually pixel the portraits and use a lot of colors. We're spriting everything.

Lets just make the card a smooth gradient style.

Those are really ugly.

As insufficient as this is, shouldn't we come up with a font style before we make all of this?
