Right, but he needs to focus on fixing the base sprite before moving onto the rest of the poses.

Shades are used to show curvature in a sprite. Use shading to show bumps/Shapes that are on the object, or else it means that object is flat. Add highlights to also give a sense of shape on a sprite. Limit yourself to colors more, you used an unnecessary 2 shades of brown. Goomba's usually have uni-brows and bigger eyes than that, but that might just be you giving him a scared expression. Use A.A.: Anti-Aliasing is when you use darker shades around the edges of the object to give it a sense of smoothness. A.A. doesn't neccessarilly have to be on the outside of a sprite, in fact, its recommended to be used more on the inside.Color contrast is how darker or lighter a shade is compared to another. It makes shading much more noticeable, which also leads to making your light-source more noticeable.

This is an edit of your sprite with all the fixes stated above, do not use it. Its just an example to help give you a better image:

No, I wouldn't recommend that. Paint is the best. By far. And its easy to use.
And nice update, but I'm feeling that the eyes are too close together, the torso/stomach is too thin now, and the Feet should have shading too.

Weegee, take Iceman's principles of shading and lighting and try to include it into your sprite. Smoothen out the outlines as well.

Paint works on linux? I use linux, and I want to know if works...
Also, I think for the pros is that program I cited, if that someone with problems with shading, or is not good at computers, Paint is the solution!
Go grab it! Big Grin

Well, you did steel my eyes, A.A. example, and pull the shades across 1 more pixel. Ninja
EDIT: But it doesn't matter. It actually looks better. But consider what I stated above!
