Sure, you make up the part that makes game sales possible, but sometimes the complaining actually starts to become annoying, especially when these complaints are just nitpicking. Also, you're not more of a gamer if you like / play the following games:
  • Indie games
  • Halo
  • Any retro game
  • GoW (both games with this initial)
  • Any fucking Nintendo game that's supposedly "not casual"
  • Any FPS or RTS that has a large following
  • World of Warcraft
  • By extention not playing World of Warcraft
  • Anything not "casual", because "casual games are for scrubs"
  • FUCKING ANY GAME THAT GETS LABELED AS "HARDCORE"

Seriously, fuck you, you people are the bane of gaming.

Ok, fucking stop right there.

Can you first sensibly explain to me (and I guess this goes for Metaru and G-Man too) what's so reprehensible about the term 'Gamer'? Semantically, it means nothing more than 'someone who plays games', of which (of course) there will be subategories regarding to genre or platform fandoms. This is obvious and extremely evident.

Games as a form of media are actually pretty lucky to have that kind of terminology; where in other fields you get 'movie enthusiasts' or 'avid readers' or whatever. Yes, I can say 'gaming enthusiast' instead of 'gamer' (and sometimes I do; for sake of variety), but this undermines people who play games often, but aren't necessarily 'enthusiasts' in the same way that collectors, or retro enthustasts would be.

So clue me in there - why the sore response to it? Is it an issue with being labled or something? Do you just dislike being associated with negative interpretations of people who play games? Well bad news - there are poor stereotypes with every form of media; and just saying you're not a 'gamer' will not stop other people from acknowledging that large pile of obscure JRPGs in your room or that XXL t-shirt with 'Two Girls, 1-Up' on it.

Edit: Oh, and I said favourite games (period), not favourite game periods. I think you're the only person who's misread that.

I think the logic is (that i SORT OF agree with) is that the term has become dirtied by people whose lives are nothing beyond video games (and these people are without exception really lame) and smug elitists like us don't want to associate ourselves with some mainstream-FPS-playing-ctrl+alt+delete-reading "GAMER MAN I LOOOOVE VIDEO GAMES BRO!!" guy

however i know you're writing for an article and you need to quickly convey the idea of "a person who plays game" so ignore all that and keep using it for your article, don't worry

edit: more logical explanation also; we don't really make a special term for people who go to movies and people who read books (the term "reader" doesn't have an implication of anything other than "one who reads," there isn't a "reading books subculture")
but again, let me stress that you're right and quickly conveying idea for the practicality of an article supercedes all of this and I doubt most people who will be reading your article will think of it this way

Everything about Gary's post makes me hate him a little more.

I can somewhat identify with not wanting to be called a gamer, because the term is usually synonymous with fat, sweaty, annoying basement dwellers who use it as a term of endearment (I'M A GAMER, GUYS!).
It's the same reason why I love anime/manga/japan, but hate the term "otaku" because of all the narutards and annoying fangirls who use it to describe themselves yet know nothing about anything.
Same with the term "geek".
It's just annoying as shit.

It's sort of a double standard I suppose, but it's more like when referring to all the people who play games collectively, you use "gamers", but when you're referring to an individual, you use "gaming enthusiast" or something along those lines, if that makes sense to you.

Vipershark, gonna add this: you're no Otaku, You're a weeaboo. Hell I'm not Otaku and the anime recommendations thread kinda proves that I have seen and read a lot of good stuff to the point were just about anyone can find 1 thing they like on my list and I do like Japan enough to the point were I'm open about learning about it's culture (Most of it is actually interesting) and language if I need to but uh I'm not retarded enough to the point where I think I'm better and smarter then everyone else on the culture of Japan by only reading the comic books it produces.

Hell Vipershark, not even you are that stupid. What makes you a Weeaboo is that if we talk to you over skype or msn you tend to say nothing at all unless we talk about anime. We know you like more things then anime like videogames for example but you always seem to want to talk about anime and it sometimes makes you seem one dimensional.

Also i see Gamer as a blanket term to mean "Those who play video games" nowadays because nowadays many people assosciate the game WoW with the fat sweaty basement dwellers.

gonna stop you here for a second
the 2 or so times that I was even talking to you guys on skype (that didn't include arguing) you were talking about standup comedians, which is a subject that i'm pretty unfamiliar with; it's only natural that i wouldn't have much to add to the conversation.

I talk about other things all the time :/
It's just that since this is a forum that's predominantly about videogames, other things that i'm interested in don't come up often.

I've debated with you guys about music and cars and food and other stuff before; we just don't do it very often.

let's not derail the topic though

I'm not if you read my last sentance it had to deal with the term Gamer.

But we also talked more then just about stand up comedians infront of you and whenever I try to talk to you over msn you basically say nothing.

Well anyway thats my two cents.

problem with calling yourself "Gamer" is
[Image: american-gamer.jpg]
the word itself has got a negative connotation, despite it not being more abnormal semantically speaking than "reader" or "watcher". its the bad stereotype we all want to avoid.

or gamer for short :I

Anyway, hating on the word 'gamer' is kinda stupid because we all know Grooveman meant the 'good' meaning of 'gamer' (unless you thought he was secretly trying to call us a bunch of fat sweaty men that dwells on the basement).

And, in this sense, I don't see a problem with it. Just saying.
