There's a huge difference between "Popularity doesn't necessarily indicate quality" and "Popularity makes something bad".
Besides, the word "hipster" is so fucking overused these days it's ceased to even describe anything. It's a close second to "epic" in that regard.

Wow, I posted this as a simple conversation thread, and it turned into a hot topic...
Anyway, I've just discovered another game I hate: Combat School for arcades! For those who haven't heard of it, you control a Marines recruit who is going through basic training. You have an obstacle course, three types of shooting ranges, an Ironman race, arm-wrestling, and a hand-to-hand combat fight with your drill instructor. Most of them aren't too bad (the obstacle course, Ironman race, and arm-wrestling are basically military versions of Track & Field minigames), but once you get to the fight with your drill instructor, it all goes downhill; the hit detection seems very biased toward the instructor (he'll almost always connect with his attacks, while you rarely will), and you'll probably find yourself getting your ass kicked multiple times due to the biased hit detection! But even worse, there's a Mission you have to do after graduation, which is hard as FUCK! You have to infiltrate a besieged White House (in your dress uniform, oddly enough), with NO WEAPONS, while many terrorists come rushing at you WITH WEAPONS! There are knife-wielding terrorists who can stab you before you can even hit them (a couple even THROW THEM AT YOU), molotov-throwing terrorists with the most sadistically erratic throwing pattern I've ever seen, and you also have to fight a chain-wielding terrorist and a final boss who has the same biased hit detection as your drill instructor! Because of this game, I have significantly less hair on my head, if you know what I mean!
Edit: Oh, and did I mention that all but the knife-throwers and final two enemies can kill you in ONE HIT!? And you have NO EXTRA LIVES AND CAN'T CONTINUE!?

I think Spacewar! was the first game to really make video games an art personally. Came out like 45 years before Bioshock.
As for Metacritic and popular opinion, critics seem to be okay at recognizing really shitty games, but in general videogame critics just like to regurgitate popular opinion back at people over and over again (look at all those top XXX games lists which position SMB1 or Zelda oT or Chrono Trigger or Portal as The Best Game Of All Time, lol). This is a problem that seems unique to the videogame industry too; the film industry has many different critics with many different opinions and tastes, but in this industry we have critics who all appreciate the same videogames and all have the exact same taste (which kind of defeats the purpose of even having criticism in the first place!).

No he's a normal person. A "hipster" is someone who, like many people at some point, notices that many "mainstream" things are dumbed down and simplified to appeal to the lowest common denominator (i.e. biggest) audience, but then they make the mistake of extending this observation to all popular things, and also assume that if something is unpopular it cannot be dumbed down. A normal person, in contrast, develops some degree of critical faculty and is able to distinguish between good and bad regardless of popularity.

I just meant the whole internet fad about defying the mainstream. I never say hipster other wise.
Shit guys.
From what I understood from his original post, it sounded like he didn't like bioshock cause it was a popularly rated game.

games like bioshock and god of war still have really high scores so thats moot
From that post it seems that way.
Anyway. This whole discussion is dumb and off-topic.

IRDC if a game's "popular" or not, if I love it and enjoy that's fine by me.
Many of the most talked about games aren't interesting to me anyway (Portal, TF2, Phantasy Star, etc.). :v

it meant "it is just popular opinion
so that means its not an accurate indicator"
the topic is actually pretty on-topic. its about games you hate. this feeds right into that.

Bioshock isn't a game I really "hate", but it is a game I was very, very disappointed in.
Bioshock's writing is phenomenal. At least, the writing is good outside the part where you actually play the game. The game itself is really what ruined Bioshock for me. The game's pacing is bad and forced. The game play was mediocre and I really hated the "puzzles" that Bioshock had. The moral system was bullshit, I wasn't able to properly empathize with the plight of the Little Sisters and Big Daddies (mostly because they weren't conveyed in a way that you would empathize with or pity), and it just wasn't a pleasant experience.
Bioshock isn't the worst game I've ever played, but it's definitely not worthy of the praise it gets.
Bioshock should have been a movie.

You know what game I dislike?
Fallout 3.
I just could not get into that. There was nothing exciting about the game that gripped me, and I wasn't able to find any particular segments that didn't feel repetitive or a complete chore for me to do :C
And it's weird considering I liked Oblivion, but stuff like the Dark Brotherhood quests got me hooked due to their pure insanity (being the murderer in a murder mystery? I am a bad person for finding this fun). I guess I never got far enough into Fallout to find anything truly enjoyable in it
HAVE I BEEN MISLEAD?? THE DREAM ISN'T DEAD???
Woppet, Previous (the previous sig [hurr]), Strasteo (current avatar), TomGuycott, Gors 1, 2, 3, 4; Crappy Blue Luigi, SmithyGCN, Demonlemon 1 and 2, Chris2Balls, Phantom K, Kosheh, Sengir 1, 2
There are still other people I need to acknowledge for their love but I'm not done digging their love up, STAY TUNED FOR MORE

I enjoyed the segment in The Vault but the second I left the vault I completely and totally lost all interest in playing the game further. From what I've seen, I haven't missed much.

You missed plenty! There's MILES of ruddy brown and gray terrain to explore!
Not a fan of Fallout, Mass Effect, or Too Human.
