Sonic CD Re-release
#16
I don't know how much space does a N64 Virtual Console game takes, but I found a torrent with 46 Virtual Console games (NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, etc) and it had 860MB. Dividing 860 by 46, you get an average of 18MB more or less.

Sonic CD, the ISO with all of the individual music tracks occupies 80MB.

The Wii version of Sonic 4's music uses Wii MIDI instruments so that it wouldn't get past the size restriction of the WiiWare

You have a point with most of what you said, I think you can explain it better than I can. Although I have to disagree with you on the Steam thing. Emulation is a wonderful thing. Tongue

I may get it at some point though anyway purely for the added features if they add enough interesting stuff to it.

I mean come on, I'm sure the size restrictions for that game can't be that bad.

You forget that the game has a CD quality soundtrack, sound effects and a few FMV's that take up a lot of space. I know that the Gems collection version of the ISO is about 430 MB or so though I don't know how much of it is compressed and how much is just art since each level has a separate set of sprite tiles. I'm sure they could cut down the size by making a MIDIish version of the original soundtrack, but that kinda defeats the point of porting the game.

Edit: You beat me to that one Rokkan.

Hell, with something like that, they could do something awesome like everything from Sonic 1, 2, and 3K in one game. An idea like that seemed pretty farfetched until this came along honestly.

I was hoping they'd actually go and do this one day, considering that S3 happens directly at the end of S2 and SK obviously happens at the end of S3.

Only problem is they'd have to come up with a story of how the six emeralds in S1 became seven in S2 and super sonic was never available in S1

Isn't Rondo of Blood on the Virtual Console? That might be about the same size as Sonic CD, does anyone know how much space that takes up on the Wii?
Doofenshmirtz: This is a little bit awkward but have you seen my escape jet keys? (Perry nods) What, you have? Well that's great! So where are they? (Perry looks away) You won't tell me? Is this because you don't speak or are you just being a jerk?

@Viper: Super Sonic wasn't available in Sonic 1 because he only had six of the seven Emeralds, and the seventh one hadn't been discovered yet. Problem solved.

I'm getting this on Steam on Day 1. This is pretty much Sonic CD The Better Version. It's going to play better (because of the engine that replicates the programming of the main classic Sonic titles, which were programmed better than Sonic CD was, while also playing by Sonic CD's rules and other tweaks, such as having the UFOs at the Special Stages have proper size scaling instead of having one set of sprite for each "set distance" you are of him), look better (widescreen, and you are also able of applying filters), and be pretty much all around better. This is why this warranted a thread. It's going to be a tweaked version of an already amazing game (proper tweaks, not Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis)

Actually Viper, that thing of the emeralds is what makes me feel that Sonic CD is not between the happenings of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 like most fans claim. Sonic 2 is a direct sequel to Sonic 1 because, according to the original japanese manual of Sonic 2, right after the events of Sonic 1, Robotnik finds the location of a seventh emerald that he did not knew it existed on an island callled West Side Island, and uses his Death Egg to threaten the people of the island into giving him the seventh emerald. Sonic, with the six other emeralds, gets the seventh one, and foils Eggman's plans.

An N64 game at maximum should be about 44.9 MB (and this is based what disk space it took up to have Sin and Punishment on your wii.)

That said, I think it'd be fair to say it's possible that Nintendo could do what microsoft did and raise the maximum size limit if they really wanted to. But at this point I think they'll probably wait and put it on Wii U when the console comes out.

Conker's Bad Fur Day is 72 mb, and it's the biggest ROM I've downloaded. Most N64 games tend to fall between 16 and 20 mb.

I was only counting what was on VC. however, you do raise a good point.

I personally think they should allow at least 1GB per a game on VC, I mean, it's not like it'll take forever to actually download one game unless you plan on buying a fuck ton of them.
