We could just list it as... y'know, both.

Changing it depending on where the person is viewing it from is that much more cooler though.

I want to see Mega Drive too!

Could be like the forum: Genesis / Mega Drive.
But Goemar's idea is very cool! (if possible)

Yeah it's cool and would require some coding (mostly time-consuming than hard I think). Something like "detect user system region: Japan, Europe or brazil = Mega Drive ; USA and all the other places = Genesis" or IP range
Last month I was buying myself a new TV, and when... "Heeeey, is that a Mega Drive? ...OMG, and there's a Master System as a handheld. Not sure if awesome or what"

I'll discuss this after we're done adding other stuff. We'll see. No promises. Worst case we'll add / Mega Drive on the name.

Here's the problem with that. While it's certainly possible, not terribly difficult, and a rather nice effect, it can't be done. The issue is that the links on the left are auto-generated based on their name. If you go to any sheet in the Genesis section, the word Genesis actually appears in the URL. We could change the display of just the link text but Genesis would still appear in the URL and this is an inconsistency that anyone noticing the text auto-changing would also notice. And before the suggestion to make the URL just use Mega Drive when that's what the link says comes up, that can't be done either simply because it gives an inconsistent way to access that entire section and we'd wind up with the same content indexed twice under different URLs which isn't a good thing. Sorry, but that's the way it is unfortunately.

Just changing the button is good enough for me. I mean if it says Genesis in the URL it's hardly to confuse people, and I'm sure people won't send hate filled emails about inconsistency - they'll just think it's a nice nod to the rest of the world.

How about also then having to rename the other consoles - Famicom, Super Famicom, etc. ?
I mean we have to think about that too... Mega Drive isn't the only console with a different name.

If you have a large enough Japanese/Asian traffic you could?
Once you get the code down, I can't see creating the buttons being a problem. I mean I know your working quite a bit on the site lately (Removed). Another suggestion is to update the Resource/Tutorial section. I mean you could easily link your Youtube GGD video and I'm sure members here have tutorials for things like Barubary's seemingly legendary tools (not used them myself yet, but plan to).

I don't know why you saw the progress of the new site, but we're currently not taking any suggestions on it. We've done all we can to make it usable, but even still, we are not discussing any changes we have made there.
Additionally, stating the obvious seems pretty silly. We need to update the resources section and we need to make tutorials. We are going to link our youtube videos with tutorials to the site, but we have yet to do that so far... If you want to discuss anything with the new site, I'd rather you do it in private.

If you want to discuss anything with the new site, I'd rather you do it in private. Just want to reiterate this for everyone else as well. We know there are quite a few of you who have somehow stumbled across the test site. That shouldn't have happened though so enjoy your preview but you should not be discussing anything you saw there anywhere publicly as the site was not, nor currently is, ready for the public eye yet.

I won't say anything about it or was going to, but just wanted to say I didn't mean to see it.

I'm fairly confident I can speak for Dazz when I say this but we're both pretty confident that it's an old server setting that allowed some of you to see it by mistake. I don't think he ever assumed anything malicious. Edit: Also, I just looked into the region-specific console names issue a little bit more and I'm realizing it's a lot more difficult than I thought. I thought I remembered some PHP functions that could do this but from what I can tell, there's no way to get this information natively. It requires access to a geo IP service, the better of which are paid subscriptions, to match your IP to a database and return the country. Even the free versions that seem to be even remotely accurate require constantly updated databases that need to be maintained locally which seems like overkill for this particular situation.

Lips are sealed. Been on MSN quite a lot lately, always seem to be away but I'll see if I can catch you some time soon. As for the region thing. Cheap Ass Gamer becomes Cheap Arse Gamer in the UK. I'm not sure if you can peak at the code behind it or anything, but may be worth a go. Don't really know any other sites which do such things. |
