imagine all the babies at the tournament complaining that they can't use PacMan or Cole. it's literally "buy the PS3 version or be a tool"
though from how things are shaping up, you'll kinda end up looking like a tool if you buy this game anyway.
One thing that also bugs the ABSOLUTE SHIT out of me is Taro and Kuro, being literally half the size of their opponents has to be the most irritating thing in a fighting game. Low-stance opponents are one thing; tiny characters are a different story. Hopefully they're useless beyond playability
the gem system and pandora system feel kinda...tacked on too, ugh

Playing it at NYCC was actually kinda fun - if they released that build and didn't release a shitload of bad mechanics that'd be a fine game as-is.

though now that I think about it, this game feels more like Capcom VS SNK to me than something like MVC3. Like I feel like CvS2 changed things up significantly, yet it was still enjoyable and most of all playable. However I can probably safely say this as SNK and Capcom games are closer in design to one another than SF and Tekken, so it's not like you had to dramatically change the game mechanics or anything to make it work.

Combos didn't feel exactly effortless; in fact, I actually kinda liked the combo system in this game while trying it out, though admittedly if you can LP LK HP HK that's probably not a deep combo system now is it :/

the good thing (if you could call it that) about console exclusive characters and their effect on tournaments is that they will probably be banned to be fair to people who might not own that console (at least, I'm p. sure that they did this for mortal kombat 9 and previous soul caliburs)

but, of course, that just makes me kind of annoyed that resources that could've been spent on "real" characters that I can actually use for things other than messing with friends or in training mode were instead spent on these guys, funny as bad box art mega man is

37 characters excluding console exclusives

plus DLC down the line

plus possible unlockable characters

i think there's enough already that they can fill 5 slots with joke characters

and there's going to be more

That's an article written before the game's release, and while it's not entirely false, the big panic over skins/costumes being on the disc is completely unwarranted and silly.

Characters on the disc comes down to a compatibility issue, people who wouldn't want to shell out 20 dollars for 12 characters (an incredibly good deal, fyi) would be locked out of playing with people who bought the character pack. Compatibility patches released alongside the characters would be a nice alternate solution, but Mortal Kombat 9 tried that, and their online play ended up being a completely unorganized mess as a result.

Same goes for the costumes - it's in the interest of keeping the game fresh, as Capcom has announced that they're not planning on releasing an updated version a la Ultimate Marvel or Super Street Fighter 4, it's not like they're forcing you to buy anything, and even if they were: the prices are surprisingly tolerable. The character pack in November is following a bunch of free patches and content to be dished out over the next few months and it's only 20 dollars. That's a better deal than 5 dollars per character like vanilla Marvel, or 4 characters for 15 dollars like Arcade Edition.

I was probably a little quick to be getting indignant like that, fair enough, but my issue here is that if the characters are clearly ready for the release, what reason is there not to include them in the base game, aside from profit? Especially when all 12 characters are going to be included in the PS Vita version. I don't disagree that 12 characters for 20 bucks is a good deal, but when the characters could've just as easily been enabled in the base game? When you buy a 6 pack of soda that only has 4 bottles, do you call it a good deal when the vendor sells you the last two at a discount? I realize console video games are an industry, and I don't think anyone's going to go broke from purchasing these characters, but it just seems dishonest.

Here's the difference; fighting games aren't soda. Fighting games are fighting games.

Here's why what Capcom is saying makes sense;

Do you remember in arcades, where there would be certain games that would have [x] amount of characters, and then you'd go back like 2 weeks later, and suddenly there's [y] amount of characters? This is called time release, and some of the best fighting games of the arcades used this system to keep interest in the game. This encouraged people to put in more money for new stuff that they never expected to see.

But here's why this is both different and the same.

Street Fighter X Tekken has upwards of 40-50 characters in it. Already. It won't take long, but after a few months, most players will have these characters figured out. There'll be much less stuff to learn with them, and eventually people are going to start playing it less and less.

This is where the DLC characters come in.

A few months after the game is out and we've figured out all the current characters in the game, BAM. All of a sudden, here's an entire 12 new characters to learn. Like, holy shit. We knew these characters are in the game already, sure, and it really does look like (and to an extension is) just a money grab off of people, but when you consider that it's only $20 for 12 brand-new movelists, which brings the grand total to 52-62 characters in the same game, it really is just fine.

Plus, since the characters are on the disc, like Bryan said, compatibility problems between those who bought the characters and those who didn't are nonexistant.


Fighting games are a competitive genre. The reason we play them is for the competition. It's almost like a lifestyle to us, to an extent. Those of us that really love the games will not mind shelling out $20 for what is essentially on-disc DLC for the following reasons:
1) We're here to play the game.
2) Every other company is doing similar shit anyway, so it's sort of unfortunately becoming a part of game development :l
3) We like the characters.

What you're saying to me is that fighting games don't retain interest long enough because once people learn a character they get bored. That doesn't seem like good design to me.
IMO. Then again I sold Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but that's because no one else would play with me, not because I was bored of the characters.

It's not necessarily "boredom," but gamers tend to want more. There is nothing wrong with variation, and again-- DLC generates interest. There's a reason Capcom didn't release all of the UMvC3 costumes at once.
