Okay, sounds cool.
I think the only characters that I can suggest are ones that appeared in "Jump Ultimate Stars". Eg, Kenshiro from "Hokuto no Ken" and Eve from "Black Cat".
But that's just because I'm a big anime fan.
I can tell that you're not good with Flash, since you still call it "Macromedia Flash", when it was bought by Adobe and renamed "Adobe Flash" almost ten years ago.
LOL, just kidding. It's an easy mistake.
In all seriousness, you really should have some animations in your story mode (even simple ones) if you want to make it look more appealing.

Will these animations be done with sprites, or will they be drawn from scratch?

oohhhh hey jitter, i see you've moved on from the mg forums heheh
last time i saw you geno was contemplating banning you for some reason
anyway i feel like this should be said: if you wanna be successful in a project like this, you'll probably need a team
especially if you're aiming for decent quality. it's a lot of work, especially if you use flash because the flash player is shit
and this is coming from an AS3 programmer
XBOX: snailegacy || PSN : dyXribo
Flash Player is decent, also coming from an AS3 programmer. But of course it depends on the game, huge power-hungry games will obviously run shoddily on it. It's not too difficult to make things for it though, especially if you use a library like FlashPunk or Flixel.
You probably do need a team though. Not a huge 10+ person team, but it's easier if you don't have to take care of everything yourself. Like one person to do (or help with) graphics, and maybe someone else for music and/or sound effects.
It is of course possible to do on your own, but this looks quite ambitious for that and it would take a lot of time. Especially if this is your first game, it could get overwhelming rather quickly.
You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing that we call "failure" is not the falling down, but the staying down. -Mary Pickford

Do you need any specific program in order to make animations?
I don't know much about GameMaker, you see, so I don't know if it has a built-in animator, or if animations have to be done in an external program.
