[TUTORIAL] N64 Texture Ripping
#1
UPDATED 1/19/2017
As of now, the method used in this tutorial doesn't seem to work properly anymore, much to my sad face causing dismay. Not sure why that is exactly, but luckily I do have a new method figured out, just need to write up a new tutorial when I get the chance. Fun times. Until then, sorry for the inconvenience and/or waste of a click!

Special thanks to: TwisterWithATrickster for being a real bro and helping me work through the new method, he's a p. cool duder.

UPDATED 7/4/2015

I was looking for some good tutorials for N64 texture ripping when I first started, but couldn't find any, so I decided to make one!

=Required Programs=

1.Project64
2.RiceVideoPlugin
3.Any N64 rom

=Setup=
Start by moving"RiceVideo.dll" and "RiceVideo6.1.0.ini" from the downloaded RiceVideo files to the "1.6 Plugins" folder within the Project64 folder.
Then move the "BMGLibPNG.dll" file to the main Project64 directory.
Once all the files are in place, the plugin must be activated within the emulator. Run Project64 and go to "Settings..." within the "Options" tab. You can also press Ctrl+T to do this.
Then click "Plugins"

Proceed to switching the default graphics plugin with Rice.

You're now finished with the basic setup! Exit the settings and open up the game.

=Ripping the Textures=
You will now need to play the game you intend to rip from until your desired target is present on screen. I'm using Kirby from Kirby 64 as an example. Once your target is on screen, click the "Options" tab and then click "Configure Graphics Plugin...".
To see the advanced options, such as the texture dumping, you'll need to uncheck this box here.
After, go to the "Texture Filters" tab and check this box and exit the window.
Now all you need to do is go back to the "1.6 Plugins" folder where you moved the dll files associated with rice and you should see a new "texture_dump" folder with varying amounts of textures!

=SUCCESS=

If there is anything else I can do to make this tutorial easier to understand, let me know! Smile

Try the Dolphin emulator texture dump feature for GameCube games. I've never ripped from either Playstation system so I wouldn't know anything about that I'm afraid.

Shoot me a PM if necessary if you need further explanation on the process for GameCube, though.

Are you sure you created it within the "Plugin" folder?

Yeah, and nothing happens.
Well in my PJ64 emulator a black text box appears indicating the textures are being placed in the folder, and when I check it out it's empty.

That's odd. What game are you attempting to extract from?

Does the game play okay? It could be a problem with the rom itself. I personally tried Banjo-Kazooie (J) and the texture dump worked fine on my end.

If it does play alright I recommend reading through the tutorial again, maybe re-downloading RiceVideo if necessary.

I finally found the folder and it's filled with textures, I was just looking for them in the wrong locations.

I'm trying to rip the textures from Banjo Kazooie (US Version).

It seems to work, since many of the textures are being confused with other ones, but they are not extracted into the texture_dump folder I created: C:\Program Files (x86)\Project64 2.1\Plugin\texture_dump

Help? Please?

Hrm, try deleting your "texture_dump" folder and be sure not to recreate it. Go through the process of dumping the textures again. When you're finished, check the "Plugin" folder once more. If a "texture_dump" folder has appeared without you specifically creating it, it should be working. If not, something went wrong during the set up process.

If I remember correctly, manually creating the texture_dump folder isn't completely necessary.

This doesn't work for somereason, there are like 3 tabs for graphics plugin, a texture dump without the rice plugin for somw reason. I have like Project64 2.0. I kinda want textures from the Stone Tower from Majoras Mask, or even moar stage textures, lol.

Unfortunately, it still does not work. It doesn't create the texture_dump folder.. ugh. I just wish people had already uploaded the ripped textures from Banjo Kazooie already..
