easy for u to say when all protags look like u

na it's because the extremely vocal, equally judgemental people on social media complain that it makes games stale when it's the same balding white machismo guy is on the cover of a game (because, apparently, the bald white machismo is the "ideal" avatar to appeal to the majority of its consumers)

though, come to think of it, it's funny how Nintendo is being shat on over these things lately (Tomodachi Life, Fire Emblem, etc. and now...this?) and it seems like no one in Japan really gives a shit as long as it's a good game

Real strong technical arguments. Also strong arguments against it, and the original Pac-Man did save the industry...

IMO, they should both be in there. Those two games are both incredibly historically important to the medium.

a-are people really getting behind a soapboxing kotaku editor on this one? waht
i'm shocked because it's not Patricia Hernandez for once, it's another blogger who can't write his way out of a paper bag

Quote:The Strong’s committee included journalists from outlets like Game Informer, Polygon, and Wired, and academics from places like Georgia Tech, New York University, and Stanford. The committee was restricted to a list of 15 nomineesAngry BirdsDoomFIFAThe Legend of ZeldaMinecraftThe Oregon TrailPac-ManPokémonPongThe SimsSonic the Hedgehog,Space InvadersSuper Mario Bros., Tetris, and World of Warcraft—provided by the Strong, which sifted through thousands of nominations from the public.

first of all, look at those names. this is a case of a kotaku editor splitting hairs, and his argument is literally "Ms. Pac Man should have been nominated, because it's better. There I said it"
I mean Super Mario Bros. 3 was the best-selling Mario game of all time and I think the best-selling videogame of all time for a LONG time until GTA I think? came along. I don't see that title up there in the nominations.

those are franchises. When there's a nominee, it's based on their legacy, not the individual title by itself. so...Pac-Man getting into the hall of fame includes the rest of its legacy as well, like ms. pac man
and that shitty new cartoon

I mean, the Museum of Play even said

Quote:The World Video Game Hall of Fame recognizes electronic games that meet the following criteria: icon-status, the game is widely recognized and remembered; longevity, the game is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over time; geographical reach, the game meets the above criteria across international boundaries; and influence, the game has exerted significant influence on the design and development of other games, on other forms of entertainment, or on popular culture and society in general. (A game may be inducted on the basis of the last criterion without necessarily having met all of the first three.)

I'm pretty sure "influence" spreads to "design and development of other games" like Crazy Otto, the derivative that eventually turned into Ms. Pac-Man

I don't know, I don't read Kotaku very often (and certainly not enough to follow their journalistic bullpen). I was just putting it forward that there are arguments for Ms. Pac-Man's inclusion other than the fact that it's Ms. Pac-Man (which is what was stated in the post I responded to).

Then it was clarified that the majority of the vocal proponents for Ms. Pac-Man's inclusion only argued on behalf of the character's gender and not really anything else to do with the game itself.

I don't know what you want out of that huge post, Kosheh.

I'm...not sure either. I'm referring to this Kotaku article.
The writer is complaining about the game itself not making it into the Hall of Fame due to the fact that it's the superior title.
Meanwhile, people are...apparently making this into an issue of gender? And that's...where I'm lost. Am I missing something? Am I only reading half of the article?

Question, what's the difference between Pacman and Mrs. Pacman? I feel like I should know this.

I just didn't want that huge paragraph in my quote, that wasn't really directed towards you.

One has a bow, beauty mark, and lipstick and the other doesn't.

Seriously, though; most people your age (and def. not mine either - p. sure Jermungandr couldn't tell you from memory) wouldn't know this off the top of their heads, but:

  • Four different mazes that change and alternate after each of the game's intermissions
  • Three of the four mazes (the first, second, and fourth ones) have two sets of warp tunnels as opposed to only one in Pac-Man's maze.
  • Walls are solid as opposed to neon outlines, so it's easier for a new player to see the paths
  • Sound effects and music are really different
  • Fruits bounce randomly around the maze (and then offstage through the warp tunnels) instead of just sitting in the center of the maze
  • The orange ghost is called Sue, rather than Clyde
  • Ghosts have different behavioral movements, and include semi-random movements. Players could just rely on the ghosts' patterns to clear the mazes in Pac-Man
  • When Ms. Pac-Man makes contact with a ghost and dies, she spins around instead of folding in on herself like Pac-Man did.
  • The three intermissions are about the relationship between Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man (from when they first meet to having a stork drop off their baby)

The ghosts are also significantly faster and more aggressive.

I made a bit of a score today! While visiting a friend's house, I inquired about his video games and he mentioned something about a DS he never plays before. I asked about the games, and he showed me his collection. I spent 50 dollars (he's an American friend), but it was well worth it because I walked out with several games from the last couple generations of Pokémon games that I missed. Heck, I even got Pokémon: Soul Silver, which I heard good things about, so I'm interested in playing that soon!

random thought, but after thinking about it a little more

as far as comparisons between xcom and code name steam
I guess it's actually kind of a lot like classic xcom (with its Time Unit / AP system, albeit with some changes such as being able to temporarily take back movement, though an option can activate that same sort of thing in code name steam)), but with modern xcom's squad size, so the player has fewer people to track at all times
of course, that's just for the tactics gameplay, but just felt like putting this somewhere lol

speaking of turn length, it looks like classic xcom enemy turns generally lasted similar amounts of time as code name steam's before the speed up patch (though player turns were much longer since, y'know, 20 guys to move)
that said, I think code name steam handled those enemy turns a little better, in that you don't just get a static image overlay when enemies out of your vision range are moving
though I guess that's just a small point, since staring at walls isn't really that much different

personally, I don't really like the speed up patch's way of addressing the problem, since it's very much a hamfisted way to do so
my own suggestion would be to make enemies outside of line of sight entirely should teleport through their movements (at least until they reach positions in sight of the player)
units that are in line of sight, but not likely to make contact with players this turn should play sprinting animations and move faster than normal
finally, enemies that don't move (such as certain overwatch hounds) should immediately skip their turn instead of playing a 2 second "look around animation" and then ending their turn (with the exception of such enemies that are REALLY CLOSE to player units MAYBE; I don't know if that fear aspect of having these enemies look like they might have noticed you is really enough to keep it around at all, especially after the first time)
that said, would probably be a good idea to keep the speed up button, too

RIP Satoru Iwata.... to pass at 55 is such a shame.

You did a lot of great things in your time though.

Yep, it's not a joke

As the Japanese would say "Well, this sucks ass". He was an okay guy, even if I didn't always understand despite his polite insistence to do so.

Rest in peace, Satoru Iwata

Reggie knows what the company needs, though I doubt they will let an American be head honcho.

Be a reverse Sega, wouldn't it? Still, best to leave that to those who decide it. Just sucks that its a thing at all.

That really caught me off guard. I mean, god, the guy was 55, how was I supposed to expect that.

... Well, I guess that's the way life goes. Rest in piece, Mr Iwata. May you go directly to heaven...

Just heard the news. Rest in peace, Mr. Iwata.

You were directly responsible for some of my favorite Nintendo games and you were incredibly memorable at every E3 you attended.
