So in my opinion, my original model was utter crap and it was pretty unanimous that I should update it.
Finally getting around to it over a year later, here's work in progress on a new model I started a few weeks ago. My focus on modeling this time around was making everything as quad-friendly as I could. The modeling for the head, body, shoes, and all textures and materials were made from scratch. Socks and gloves were just moved from the generations model and edited to be 100% quad friendly. They'll probably be replaced by my own modeling in the end though. Body and skin materials are still untextured.

So for now, I'm looking mainly for feedback on the modeling aspect, but anything else can be said. Be as nice or brutal as you want, but any feedback or suggestions that'd help in the end will be most appreciated.
Some questions if you don't know what to look for:
In general, does it look weird, and do you have any idea what exactly seems weird?
Is his face too short, long, narrow, wide, etc?
Would you prefer a side or a center mouth?
Are the shoes and hands a good size?
Is his body too lanky?
Do you like or hate the seams on the gloves and socks?
Are his arms and legs too short/long?
Are the colors a good choice?
Fire away!

This looks pretty good! Not often does very high-poly stuff show up here!
Overall I think you did a great job!
As for some tips: - Something about the face looks a little off for some reason, I can't put my finger on it however
- If you are going for a modern sonic design his spines droop down a little farther. I kinda like them the way they are though so it's up to preference. (I more prefer Classic Sonic so that's probably why I like the shorter spines, however you do what you think looks best!)
- I always prefer a side mouth over a center mouth but it looks okay in this instance so it's all up to your preference.
- I like the seams on the gloves & socks keep them!
- The arms seem a tiny bit too short
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the response - was afraid the face may look off but also can't put my finger on it lol. I'll play with the arms and quills in the meantime though

The problem with the face (at least I think this is the problem) is that it looks kinda like Boom Sonic's face from the show, and since the rest of the model looks nothing like Boom Sonic it kinda throws you off in terms of what you are looking at.

I noticed the face thing as well, I think it has something to do with the eyes, as well as the thickness of the muzzle? I'm not sure though.
I think the legs might also be a little too thick but I'm not sure on that either.
Looks great though, almost like official models!

I, for one, actually do prefer the center mouth over the side mouth, but the face thing seems apparent to me as well, since the eyes (irises) seem just a little too close to each other.

I think what looks off about the face is the eyeglobe. It's a bit too round. I'd say shoot for more of a rounded plane shape instead of a perfect sphere. Also, the torso looks a bit odd around the shoulder areas. Overall it's looking great so far, keep it up!

Hey, I've just made an account to make this post, so let me tell you what i feel to be off with this
1. Arms need to be longer
2. The mouth needs to be on the side
3. The spines need to be longer
other than that, while researching it, I've learned that recently [and by recently, i mean on and off in renders since 2005] that Sonic's shoes are reflective. Not like they reflect only some light, no, they are like mirrors with a red tint.

Looks good, reminds me of the Sonic Heroes model, here's some stuff I would change:
The "eye shine" should be on the top instead of the bottom
The gloves look a little off to me, mostly due to the seam that separates both sides, either make it less apparent or remove it altogether
There should be at least some kind of texture for his quills/fur, this is something that is mostly overlooked, but adds a great deal of detail to the character
I'd suggest making the spines a bit longer and droop a bit more

Haven't worked on this in a while, so it's nice to come back to a somewhat marinated thread. General consensus from all responses seem to be:
- The eyes are probably what's making the face look weird. Might be too round.
- Arms are too short
- Quills are too short
- Differing opinions on the mouth and gloves
Will update later and see how it goes

This is amazing looking. I know this is kinda old, but even so I wanted to give my two cents on the model.
One of the main things people are pointing out here is that the face looks off, and I agree, it does. The eyes are part of it, but I think the biggest issue is the mouth. Having it be put to the side instead could really help- see how much better this looks compared to the original- https://imgur.com/a/koiSXvI And along with that, as I outlines in the image, the muzzle needs to be out a little more from this angle. Along with that, the torso could follow a bit more of an upside down egg kind of shape, and the legs could be a little bit skinnier. There's also something odd I noticed with the arm. https://imgur.com/a/S6PUIhe Here, you see that there's some blue visible between his arm and torso, showing that the torso actually leads into the arm. Instead, the torso and arm should be separate from each other, shown in this screenshot of a Sonic model of my own: https://imgur.com/a/eDUwQrK
Overall, really good model, just has a couple issues that could be worked out.

In my opinion; Sonic's Mouth looks better in the center than to the side. I genuinely hate it when the mouth is put to the side as it just looks so awkward and it forces animators to only show Sonic from the side rather than the front as that would make it look weird.
That said, if you'd be willing, you could always do what some models do and have 2 separate meshes for either format. I came across something similar with the Koopa Troopa Model in Mario Tennis Aces where each facial expression had it's own model. You could do something similar with this and that way, you'd be pleasing both perspectives.
As for anything else; Honestly I think the people that came here before me have already said what I would say so there's no point repeating it. Either way, this is a fantastic model and I am looking forward to see it finished.
