I think side-mouths are fine for 2D renditions. Not entirely sure about 3D though. I think they're good for certain expressions in 3D (like Sonic's signature grin), but maybe center-mouths would be better as the default-position, like what they did in Sonic Adventure 2.

so, im not very good at 3d modeling but this model turned out very good.
The only thing is that sonic's face looks kinda like classic sonic but that might have been your intention.
