RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - [robo9] - 12-24-2015 Except the only of those examples in a situation that's even remotely similar (Ms PacMan/Leg PacMan) were nearly sued, and they would have been if it wasn't for the fact Namco liked the game. Obviously buying PM isn't something Nintendo planned to do or legally could do. RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - Ark Kuvis - 12-24-2015 I wonder if the salt would be lessened if Sakurai chose Fates' CoStar, Azura instead. Unlike Corrin, Azura's a lance fighter and a songstress. While she wouldn't have the dragon moves Corrin has, I'm sure you could use that lance of hers to pull off some pretty sweet attacks. Though, I guess if Sakurai is having trouble censoring Bayonetta, another scantly clad fighter would be hard to pull off. RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - Kriven - 12-24-2015 Blue-haired Palutena? RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - TomGuycott - 12-24-2015 Eh, I think any Fire Emblem characters would have been met with hostility, and it seems clear that Sakurai was aware of that. What it makes me afraid of is that some of these new and interesting characters might end up cut in a future game (though Lucina would be a good candidate to be Marth's female alt if they wanted to retain her with less backlash.) It is very likely that even if cuts aren't made in the next game, at the very least it's likely there won't be many if any new Fire Emblem characters in the next one, at least if Sakurai is directing again, unless he gets pressured to add more again. RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - Sengir - 12-29-2015 theory: a lot of Nintendo's choices just seem political. like if there's something Pac-Man, Mega Man, and Sonic all have in common it's their style. they're all family friendly series that fit well with Nintendo's primary model. Sega had (has?) a Sonic exclusivity contract with Nintendo and regularly appears in crossovers because Sonic is very compatible (regardless of how tacky it may be) like the Wii U and 3DS are mostly powered by first party titles, as was the Wii. a few good third parties, but not enough. it was their weakness. Pac-Man and Mega Man both have fairly cartoon worlds similar to Nintendo's, and im sure that Nintendo's trying to woo more AAA third parties over i mean maybe im getting my hopes up but since Melee we've seen Fire Emblem become a thing in America and since Brawl we've seen a Kid Icarus reboot. since this latest smash we've seen newcomer Shulk in a Xenoblade Chronicles sequel so im really hoping we get a new Nintendo-type Mega Man or Pac-Man or at least a Duck Hunt come on Nintendo please RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - Koopaul - 12-29-2015 Since Brawl we've also seen the Return of Donkey Kong Country. That's one of the reasons why having a new character from a certain franchise is such a big deal. Many hoped the addition of K. Rool to the roster would mean his eventual return to the main series. This is all theoretical. But having certain characters in the spotlight would spark interest of that series with the mainstream. RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - Kriven - 12-29-2015 I don't know if DKCR has anything much to do with Diddy in Brawl, or if Xenoblade Chronicles has anything much to do with Shulk in Sm4sh... I feel like both of those games were already going to happen anyway. With those properties I feel like it's kind of the reverse: if King K. Rool had been in DKCR, his chances for appearing in Sm4sh probably would have been greater. As far as "Nintendo's Picking Family-Friendly Third-Parties" k Bayonetta. But yes, Nintendo is picking characters that don't stick out like sore thumbs from their core cast. But they're also picking characters which are extremely significant to gaming as both a culture and an industry, and in at least two cases, to Nintendo itself. The rivalry between Sega and Nintendo being made tangible in Smash Bros. through the inclusion of Sonic is a strong force behind his inclusion, even ignoring the relationship the two companies have developed over the past fifteen years (close enough to release an entire franchise based on crossing over their leading men... which also pays friendly homage to the rivalry in the 90s). Then there's Mega Man, arguably the most significant third-party character to grace the NES. Far too many people already (wrongfully) consider Mega Man a Nintendo character in the same way they consider Cloud a PlayStation character. I think the only truly "political" move Nintendo has made as far as third-party characters was the inclusion of Snake in Brawl, and that was less of a political gesture on Nintendo's part and more of one on Sakurai's part, to make his friend happy. I suppose an argument could be made for Bayonetta being political, considering how deep Nintendo's hands were in those pockets, but then you could also make the argument that she's partially Nintendo's creation. RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - Ark Kuvis - 12-29-2015 I really doubt Pac-Man would be in this game if not for Namco developing the game. Though thank christ he was, Classic Pac-Man is one of the most charming video game characters ever. I wasn't huge on Pac before that trailer, but now? he's one of my favourite newcomers. Have any of the newcomers you guys didn't want originally grow on you since? I've never been a huge Robin fan, either, but man I've been playing him lately, he's fun too. RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - Kriven - 12-29-2015 I think Namco's involvement definitely gave Pac-Man some ammunition, but interviews with Sakurai and Miyamoto suggest that Miyamoto has been pushing for the character since Brawl. It seems likely that Sakurai would have already been considering him. RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - NICKtendo DS - 12-29-2015 I appreciate Shulk more now that I've actually played Xenoblade Chronicles. RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. I bought XC because of Shulk. XD He plays kinda nice. I was skimming through the fighting in the previous pages. Just wow. I'll add my five cents: I won't lie, I'll get heat for this: I also hate some of the character choices. I hated most of this roster at first, but I adjusted. My hate list consists of Palutena and Dark Pit. Especially the latter. Palutena, I can sorta understand: she was there since the first game. But for DP, I felt he got in ONLY because Sakurai himself directed Uprising. I personally didn't believe Kid Icarus deserved a jump to THREE reps up from Brawl. I began to feel like Sakurai was biased toward the games he directed. However, I applaud him for trying to make a point about the FE characters. I was mad as all hell when I saw the last DLC characters, especially Bayonetta. I was one of the obsessive K. Rool groupies. I didn't hate Bayo herself per se, her games look really fun (I have the first one and I'll be getting number 2) but because she was able to get in before storied Nintendo veterans fans love. But I've accepted Corrin, Cloud and Bayo. Why? Not much will change, no matter how pissed I get. I realized that Smash Wii U and 3DS have great stuff and focus on those instead! Bowser's back and better than ever. Charizard, my favourite Pokemon, wasn't cut. R.O.B and Wario came back. They finally gave us back Mewtwo, Dr. Mario and Roy! Happy days. Instead, I focus the dissatisfaction I do have and put it toward my own Unity fan-game. Creative outlets are the best, folks. RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - Jermungandr - 12-29-2015 The funny thing about Palutena is that after all the todo surrounding her inclusion, barely anybody seems to actually use her. RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - NICKtendo DS - 12-29-2015 I hate how changing Palutena's Special Attacks makes her a custom character, given how she's "the custom moves character" and all her custom Special Moves are unlocked from the start. If you play with customs off, by choice or by force, you're stuck with the default moveset: Unreliable homing projectile attack, counter and reflect, and Farore's Wind. My friend mentioned how he'd preferred her to have Heavenly Light as her default down Special and I have to agree, since that alone would make her stand out more. No other character has a move like that. I find Custom Special Moves in general unnecessary fluff, except for Mii Fighters. RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - TomGuycott - 12-29-2015 Custom moves do feel like more or less an afterthought. If they had a bit more time to put better attention into them they could have vast potential, but then balancing becomes an issue. I know that custom characters are not playable in all modes, but they still put balancing into consideration regardless. Also yeah, Palutena is a little underwhelming in her base state. Flashy smash attacks though, just not a lot of substance. RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - Kriven - 12-29-2015 My only real complaint with custom moves is that Mario can't shoot ice balls x.x; |
