Because he is literally useless. I love him in Duck Hunt but what the fuck is he doing in Smash? SO many other characters that would be a better fit than him, including many other "Retro" characters.
Because ROB, Ice Climbers, or even Captain Falcon were so useful before. Oh what's ROB going to do, stack some blocks? Lol all Ice Climbers do are jump and swing a hammer. Lol what's Falcon for, he just drives a race car. What the fuck is a Mr Game and Watch? So many better characters could fit here, give me another blue haired swordsman
I mean dude, if he's apart of Nintendo, the dude fits. Besides, he's one of the more popular retro characters

I don't think it's coincidential. I just posted Palutena. Palutena is even worse, it's almost 1:1, while these others are pretty different. Seriously, how do you nail Duck Hunt Dog in-style out of scratch? Or Ness, that has no other 3D model like that at all? You could say the same about a lot of characters in Smash. Before judging him as a fighter (if he even is one, of course), I'll wait until I can play as him personally. Or, hell, even just see some footage of him in action. That always gets me pumped

Wii Fit Trainer was a clever and unique choice because there's not that many fighting game characters that fight using the power of yoga (Dhalsim's the only other one I can think of). Duck Hunt Dog just jumps around and laughs at you, its entire moveset would have to rely on creative liberties.
3. How many of Dr. Mario's moves were different than Mario's in Melee, anyway? Like significant differences, not just slight rebalances.
4. I stand corrected, it's just dumb fan speculation about Sakurai "not wanting to add too many clones" or whatever. Point still remains that just because the character in question appeared in a trailer doesn't confirm that they're playable.
5. Even PSASBR had new models for the characters, not all of them were from their original games.

ROB I got nothing for, but he's a robot, so it's pretty easy to work in some ideas for him. Duck Hunt Dog is just a snarky dog, and nothing more.

I'll agree with you that this is very in-style, but that's no 3D render. I also think this probably way too much work to be put in a silly leak and not used as a lever to rise one's own art skills.
But ok, let's say this disproves all those similar characters. I'm still waiting on Ness and Duck Hunt Dog.

...What exactly did Captain Falco have before Smash? Not even Fox had anything going, they're both inside vehicles all the time. It's not that hard to imagine Duck Hunt Dog

GUYS, CHROM IS PLAYABLE, I REPEAT CHROM IS PLAYABLE.
Also Captain Falcon and Fox still have plenty to work with. Fox may be inside his ship the entire time, but he's a well known fighter pilot, and fighter pilots still receive military training doi. Also like I said Captain Falcon is regarded as a legendary bounty hunter in later games, and even then, racers are usually quick to fight, watch any racing, them boys get pissed quick.

Yes so the most logical step is to give him a fire punch and kick instead of using the pistol he still carries in his model?
If Falcon and Fox are doable, so is Duck Hunt Dog.

Because you there's literally nothing you can do with that. Nope, nothing at all. He couldn't use the ducks or anything. Couldn't use the zapper. He couldn't fight like an actual dog. Nope. Couldn't even use snarkiness for an attack. Nope. No chance for a move set here.

Also I honestly can't see them doing anything with Duck Hunt Dog other than adding a ton of new things to him. The ducks would be a final smash if anything, probably harassing other players similar to Pit's final smash from brawl. Oh cool and he's a dog so he can bite and maybe claw at people, that's fucking insanely cool, he totally looks like a character that would do that sort of stuff too(not). That "leak" of him makes him look like my dog that just naps in the sun all day and does jack shit.
