Untitled Indie Game Graphics 'N' Stuff - Kami - 07-27-2012

Kitsu's sprite of me, made me want to continue an Indie game I started a bit back.

Mockup of a Basic Dungeon:

I'll add more stuff as I complete it.

This isn't in the Game Development section since I haven't felt like starting to rewrite the engine yet, so the engine progress is nill for the moment.

I think that the background are blending with the character...

RE: Untitled Indie Game Graphics 'N' Stuff - Kitsu - 07-27-2012

The tiles are too busy, so they draw so much more attention.

RE: Untitled Indie Game Graphics 'N' Stuff - Kami - 07-27-2012

Ok I've messed with it, I have two results, the top one is the original.
Which one grabs less attention? Or was it the shades of it that grabbed attention more?

RE: Untitled Indie Game Graphics 'N' Stuff - Gors - 07-27-2012

none of those is good. the contrast between the grays in the textures are too high, and the number of the light gray squares are too much.

RE: Untitled Indie Game Graphics 'N' Stuff - Kami - 07-27-2012

I've fixed the too high contrast in the ligher grey, I'm redoing the squares/rectangles in the tileset atm.

Made a Tofu cat called a Nekofu. I hope I can get a certain Tofu related commerial out of my head...

^I think I may have went too much on this, If I remove the outline it looks kind of awkward IMO.

RE: Untitled Indie Game Graphics 'N' Stuff - Cobalt Blue - 07-28-2012

rule of thumb:

background elements: low contrast, low saturation.
foreground elements: higher contrast, more saturation.

this is purely both to increase the readbility on the sprites and also to enhace the idea of depth.

also, there is no reason to use sprites of such size for a screen of that size. you have plenty of room to work with, so dont limit yourself in that aspect.

Just a quick demonstration of how making the background lighter alone just makes it easy to read.

Meta is right, you need to seriously consider how you're using your space.

RE: Untitled Indie Game Graphics 'N' Stuff - Kami - 07-28-2012

Thnaks guys, I'll fix up the tileset and background, also I'm going to improve on the character sprites so they're bigger.

RE: Untitled Indie Game Graphics 'N' Stuff - Kami - 07-30-2012

I started makeing the characters bigger(The ones that needed to be increased.)
This is a remake of the caracter in the mockup and I ended up adding more colors and crap to the palette, I honestly think the character is too big now.
It's kind of a WIP right now, but I'll look it over again in the morning since It's close to midnight right now.

PS. As a side nore I ate about 3 pounds of chocolate a bit ago so I'm still running off of a sugar rush, but I'll probably passout in about a half an hour,
make that 10 minutes I'm starting to slow down and tire.

RE: Untitled Indie Game Graphics 'N' Stuff - Cobalt Blue - 07-31-2012

that looks awfully unreadable due to the poor shading, linework and somehow cluttered desing.
