I have some thoughts, too
-Maybe another 2.5D like in the sonic rival series, but it shouldn't be exclusive to the PSP imo
-fuck the voice acting altogether, it wasn't needed to begin with especially with shitty vioce overs in english
-Implement the 3D elements into 2D, this was accomplished in rom hacks of older games (cough cough Sonic MegaMix) so don't be telling me it can't work
lastly-No More New Characters there is already enough as is

what a terrible idea @ bold part
plus Sonic Rush already pretty much did it
there's no use for homming attack and a fuckzillion dashpads in a 2D game because Sonic has enough acceleration and top-speed to go through loopings and shit like that without needing to have the aid of dashpads, which it's pretty much why they were introduced.
Homming attack was introduced because it's hard to stomp over an enemy in a 3D environment, Super Mario 64 proved it. And in a gameplay that is supposed to be fast, this'd be complicated.

what Sonic games need to do is to introduce 2D elements into the 3D games, that is an stable engine that is very accurate to IRL physics, Sonic having the same acceleration and top-speed from the classics, Sonic builds up speed through momentum (like going through loopings and ladders) instead of dashpads, smart level design with tons of level-gimmicks that makes use of Sonic's speed and/or jumping abilities to get through, different Eggman robots with all sorts of attack patterns and design thematic that vary within the level, and of course, monitor/capsule items, that are pretty much being forgotten in the new games.
All of those things and maybe even more, then you'll get a good Sonic 3D game.

wasn't Amy 7 years old when she came out?

then they made her like 12 or something when she got the age controversy?

Also Sonic3K didn't have Fumie Kumatani composing, therefore, it's not the best soundtrack of all Sonic games. D< Neither did Sonic CD, but it had Takenobu Mitsuyoshi and Cosmic Eternity~

But I agree with you, Sonic 3 & Knuckles was one of my most pleasant experience with a Sonic game, almost par with Sonic CD.

Well I dunno what games Kumatani composed for, (or who they are sadly) but I love Howard Drossin's work more than most Japanese composers.

I regret informing you that I've never played CD, but I want to try it.

Also I just remembered MJ helped compose for Sonic 3, I'm sad now..

Actually, after the last year's interview on Drossin, it was revealed that a very very little amount of tracks are of his authory. If I recall, it was Sonic & Knuckles' theme the only track that was comproved to be his work. Pretty much rest of the whole soundtrack were composed by other composers.

Kumatani was the main composer for games such as NiGHTS Into Dreams and Sonic Adventure (alongside with Jun Senoue on the last one). She also composed several songs for Sonic Unleashed (which is one of the best game soundtracks ever) and also Sonic and the Secret Rings, along with several other works that I'm not reminded right now.

Make sure that when you play Sonic CD, you play the European/Japanese version. American version's soundtrack takes off the whole excitement of the game. It's not a bad soundtrack, but goddamnit, the Japanese one is just perfect.

Also, coming back to Kumatani, these are my favorite works of her:

NiGHTS and Reala - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ODb24FltH8

E102 Gamma's Theme - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_V6yjKc3Z0

Some Sonic 3 songs were comproved to be Michael Jackson songs but "chiptunized" and sometimes speeded up.
Michael Jackson did a tape with a lot of original tracks for Sonic 3, but after the child raping scandal, they had to push him away from the project and come up fast with new songs for the game, and those songs were "remixes" of MJ songs as I told before.

One thing I loved about Sonic 2D games is that it wasn't all GO GO GO, there was some stopping, back tracking and some exploring too.

The thing I noticed in old Sonic games was that each zone had three or four paths to go through (usually)

-You had the middle level of the stage which was pretty basic and didn't have many secrets but was safer.
-Then you had the lower level of the stage, this area was hazardous/ was underwater/ etc.
-And then there was the higher level, which had all these rings and lives but it was hard to get up there.

And you didn't have to stay the course, you could jump from a high area and take a safer route below anytime.

The thing was you had a lot of freedom to go were you wanted. You don't have that in these new Sonic games.

Ah thanks for clearing that up, the music credits for that game are so skewered it's hard to keep track of who did what anymore. :\

I guess whoever did the boss themes from that game were my favorite, as I've never heard any better to grace a game. (Ok, I'm probably speaking on behalf of nostalgia here as I spent so much time listening to Robotnik's theme and the miniboss theme) However, it is always funny hearing MJ's voice samples in Sonic 3's version of Knuckles' Theme and that game's miniboss theme. (tbh, I hated both of those themes but whatevs.)

I will be sure to play the EU version of CD just on behalf of you Rökkan.

Today has been a particularly draining day, maybe some Sonic CD will make it better...

This is what I meant with good level design.
New Sonic games just fucking obligate you to keep holding forward. Sonic 3 & Knuckles had the best level-design because it has just way too much exploring. People are finding new secret paths more than 10 years later that this game was first released.
However, one thing I liked on Secret Rings is that, even though the level-design is very straight-forward (well, it must, considering the gameplay), it did managed creative level-designs and fun stage-based gimmicks, and even a bit of backtracking on some stages. Plus the skill system should be brought to new Sonic games.
Black Knight on the other hand, threw all level-design through the window, and we recieved instead a gameplay based on masturbating your own Wii Remote while holding forward.

Doesn't contribute to the discussion, still. Now let's get back to the matter at hand.

See, the latest Sonic game I ever played was Sonic Heroes, which killed off any interest to play anything else beyond that.

I will toss a hat in its direction for Metal Overlord though, or whatever final Metal Sonic was called. Too many Sonic games revolved around having some huge fucking being be the last boss. SA2 was tolerable if only for the fact the whole battle was a reference to the Final battle in S3K, and I oddly am fond of "Live and Learn". (Plus it killed off Shadow, which didn't stop them from producing Shadow the Hedgehog though....)

So yeah, I don't know how abysmal the later games have been, nor do I wanna find out for myself.

Sonic Heroes was pretty terrible imo. But look at the guy who directed it: Takashi Iizuka!
Takashi Iizuka is a big tumor to the Sonic franchise and for the whole SEGA company as far as I'm concerned.
1st - He directed Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Heroes and NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. He transformed a cult-classic into a pile of shit.
2nd - He has dashpad fetish. He's the reason why you see so many useless dashpads on 3D games. I mean, what the fuck, what's the reason of a dashpad in a straight-forward, narrow road?!
3rd - The 1st point was convincing enough.

But you'd be surprised that Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic Rush/Rush Adventure, and even Sonic Riders could be pretty entertaining. Specially the first three, specially the 360/PS3 version of the first.
The rest is a pile of shit, really. Except for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, but that one was supervised by Miyamoto himself, so it couldn't go SEGA-wrong.
