Ninja Gaiden has that, but to a much, much smaller extent.
Is Nintendo reaching a turning point?

... True.
Then how about... Er... Psychonaut? BrĂ¼tal Legend? Peggle? There really aren't any "hardcore" games out there. Well, perhaps RPGs derived from table top RPGs, but people see those who play the games as nerds.

Gary: Shin Megami Tensei.

Psychonauts is an acceptable example sorta
gameplay-wise it's fairly basic but the scenario and all are what makes it stand out "hardcore" generally refers to niche stuff with metagaming and all that (complex gameplay styles etc) So yeah a lot of games could be considered casual, but casual doesn't necessarily mean some aren't unique/genuinely good games

Yes, but it is also never mutually exclusive. I mean, look at Peggle. It's casual to the core, casual to the bone, and yet everybody seems to like the game. Hell, even I was hooked on Peggle for a long time. I quit because it consumed my life, and all my progress got erased.
