Seppuku was the suicidal ritual of disemboweling oneself. This was often done in Japan when a person, most often a male, had brought shame to his/her country. Females had preformed the ritual in a somewhat alternative way.
Sometimes done publicly, or at least in front of another being, if the shamed person had failed to successfully preform the ritual, they were to be beheaded by another.
