Megaman 10 confirmed
the story in platformers is basically to somehow give more sense as to why a <player> would go <place> and kill <boss>.

megaman is just like castlevania and metroid in that there's a long and convoluted story that nobody cares about and everyone plays it for the gameplay

I never really thought of mega man being similar to a castlevania game

I didn't say that the games themselves are similar.
I said that the fact that nobody cares about their stories and only plays them because of the amazing gameplay/music is similar.

at least, to me, that is
samus is the most one-dimensional character ever imo and the story is total bullshit

but the games are quite amazing

Megaman actually has worlds more story than Metroid does. Part of the wonder of Metroid is that there is actually almost NO exposition aside from manuals and sometimes the opening sequence or MAYBE an in-game segment, and the rest is just action and atmosphere.

However, that has been changing, especially with Metroid Prime, and more than likely Other M in the near future. However, there is still minimal dialogue, and virtually none from Samus. Lots of mythos, though, especially with the whole aspect of scanning crap from the Prime series.

as far as metroid to fusion/zero mission are concerned, they have a p. alright plot nothing spectacular obviously
but thats not really what im going to talk about here

im going to write about 10 paragraphs about how the fact that samus as a character is "one-dimensional" is completely and totally the point of hte game


Samus, at the very least in the first three primary games, is supposed to be "one-dimensional"; she is supposed to act as an avatar for you to control and project yourself onto rather than a "cloud" or a "gordon freeman" or something like that. It's all part of that whole visual narrative/architecture thing I was talking about before, wherein the story of the game is the game itself rather than some superficial plethora of tacked on cutscenes and movies; later games slowly began to lose sight of that, though~

Meh, not really an excuse. If you're going to have an engaging plot, you need your lead character to be engaging. It's fine for her to be "omgbobafettmysterious" but not if she's in the leading role. Which she is. Metroid is Nintendo's one franchise where they can go all-out with character exploration in a serious setting and they choose to make her as bland as Link, Mario, etc. It's a shame really.
If you have a lame character that the player can project his/her own personality onto you have the base protagonist that is absolutely the worst kind of protagonist you can have because the audience does all the work for you. It's wretchedly boring. Though Stephanie Meyers did that and made a bazillion dollars, so what do I know?

Honestly, I don't find Link to be anywhere near as bland as Samus. Of course, in every game he's the one-dimensional hero, but it actually feels like he's there for a reason.

In Metroid, it's more of a "what the fuck am I even doing here" feeling.

But still, nobody cares about the story in either series, soooo

Also link has all sorts of facial expressions to relay his emotions, while Samus might have one blaaank expression in the ending of the game AT BEST...

uuuugh

the entire point is that it isn't an overdone "cinematic" mess of a "game" with a ten thousand page plotline that takes up about half of the gametime with cutscenes completely destroying any semblance of character by ironically trying to define character

you are supposed to project yourself over samus, not the opposite; metroid is not an overblown bombastic series, it is a subtle and indirect one by its very nature

if you don't understand that, fine, but don't be ignorant enough to claim it as an 'excuse' for not following what is often seen as the normal "convention"; and requesting change on the matter is nothing but an expression of ignorance

I can't help but feel that giz is way overthinking it here.

For all we know, it could simply be that the programmers were too lazy to put in any story, but they liked how it turned out so they decided to to do it for most of the other games.

I don't think it's too much to ask that the character i'm supposed to be engaged with have some kind of personality. Fusion had some through her thoughts, but the other games don't give us anything to go on. To say that a subtle character can't express anything is ridiculous. I'm sorry if "convention" is to have a character with "personality" and "motives" but if that makes me ignorant, then fine.
I'm not saying I dislike the games, just that more could be done with them. Mario can get away with it because it's a lighthearted goofy series. It doesn't need it (though the RPGs go into it a little). The Zelda series gives you some characterization through secondary characters and their reactions to Link. Samus is a one man show (so to speak), so she comes off as bland.
