Found a FFXIII impressions that really don't judges (much) at RPGFan

Quote:(...)
You see, FFXIII's gameplay is not a big truck; it's a series of tubes, or rather, a series of maps, mostly unconnected to one another, each crammed with enemies ending in a cinema scene or flashback. There is nothing even resembling an overworld until around the 30 hour mark, and even then it's more like another large dungeon than a world map connecting various locations. With precious few NPCs to interact with, no cities and a dearth of side quests, FFXIII is banking on the player being so captivated by its story that you don't even notice all of the staple JRPG features missing.

Quote:What to expect:

- The most beautiful graphics in any console RPG ever. Period. Full stop. End of sentence.
- Arguably the most beautiful music in any console RPG ever. Every moment is fully orchestrated and every song sounds fantastic. I rarely buy soundtracks. This one I made a point to purchase. I ordered it ten hours into the game (note: soundtrack release is scheduled for January 27, 2010).
- Challenge. You will die during regular battles. Sometimes frequently. This is probably the hardest Final Fantasy game ever made, and battles can take several minutes if you get flustered and don't exploit the chain break system.
- A strong story. This is not merely a decent RPG plot - it's strong science fiction writing. The cast is fantastic, particularly Lightning and and Sazh.

What NOT to expect:

- Towns.
- Any great degree of freedom to explore. This could be a major criticism in my review depending on how the second act develops.
- Minigames, dungeon puzzles, or even sidequests outside of the not insignificant mission hunts found in the game's second half. Makes the game seem kind of empty, don't it? Trust me, you'll be plenty busy just trying to get through the main game.
- A large variety of weapons and armor. There are a bunch of accessories, including bangles that increase HP. Weapons, however, won't change much as you'll mostly just repeatedly upgrade one weapon for each character until you max it out.

I lol'd at "What NOT to expect"

-Towns. Genius pure genius. I don't need no friggin town I'm a REAL man, and I don't need no NPC's with thier overpriced shyt. I don't get what everyone's bitching about. This game sounds like it's breaking every rule Final Fantasy made. That's a BIG about face one that might actually prove to be it's natural charm.

I heard that you can buy stuff via regular menu. I think it might be like Crisis Core were Zack purchase stuff (potion, materia, equips) using online stores on mobile phone (looks like it to me), so it's really not great news.
But towns were always great source of information if you look around, not to mention side-quests.

this practically sounds like an on-rails RPG

as much as I hate towns and think they're boring, I honestly can't see an FF game without them

regardless, I'm getting this day one, but I'll probably hate it Sad

I personally don't really like the way everyone just freely moves and walk into each other sometimes and do nothing in battles. I think they tried too hard making things look "different."

Nomura stick to action rpgs please, turn-based isn't your thing..and what's funny is that I think Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep for PSP is where all the effort went into since Nomura is behind all this, and that game looks A LOT BETTER.

EDIT: Versus 13 and Agito 13 better not be a dissapoint.

Actually the official word is Nomura's efforts are poured into his latest announcement as well as 13vs, apparently one fo the senior staff oversaw this game. Word in the Chocobo stables is that all the teams had NOTHING to do with each other. Fabula Nova Crystalis is suppose to be something that changes how we look at Final Fantasy apparently. The only connecting feature is that like most FF's these have crystals in them.

if i wanted a game with pure action and no exploration i'd rather not pick the RPG platform to make it.

after all, one plays a RPG for the plot and overall sense of aventure.

regardless, variety is always welcome.
