Save "Game Clear" Data...?

Except I've come to the conclusion no one understands what I'm saying. I'm gonna try this again.
Ok... I beat FF1.
And the credits finish.
Now, normally you beat a game (I'll use Pokemon as an example) and you just start the game again with everything you had, right?
Not the case with FF1.
The message said:
"Save Game Clear Data?"
Then it said something about being able to keep my beistary if I start a new game.
So I clicked: YES.
Now, my original file is still there with a star next to it.
But everytime I open that game file, it says:
There isn't enough save files slots. You'll need to overwrite one to save.
Then the bloody new game screen shows up (the one where you name your characters.)
So now, alls I got is a beaten game file I can't touch, an empty game slot, and a new game file that also has that cursed star symbol next to it.

I'd love to play through the game again with my Crissaegrim or high-level Muramasa or Fist of Tulkas and all that other crazy shit
