What makes a 'good' game?
#46
i must admit, only a few platformers cut the cheese, and they arent as good as they used to be, but Mario seems to know how to make a good platformer: new super mario bros (DS) has been in the game charts since it was released

you forgot sound

the way sound is handled is just as important as the other things

i'd say almost as important. think street fighter IIICutes, the music was very unmemorable (with the exception of chun-li's theme) and the game still kicks ass.

Bullshit - Jazzy NYC, Beats in My Head, and You Blow My Mind are all killer tracks; not to mention the title/character select themes.
Specs 'n' Headphones has been revamped! Check it, yo.

Replayability and faithfulness. What I mean by faithfulness is making a sequel a true sequel if you insist on making a sequel. I don't have a problem with sequels, but if someone's going to make a sequel, at least make it a real sequel, dammit!

Bad sequels:
Ninja Gaiden -- wtf did Ninja gaiden have to do with button mashing, attack combos and a flashing handkerchief/scarf/whatever the fuck that is?
Shining Force -- Okay, okay, so technically the Shining series was various genres, but wtf? They're massacring it now! Shining Soul? Crap, but playable. But then wtf is Shining Force Neo? That's not a fucking Shining Force game! Shining Force is a tactical RPG! It always has been! It's Shining XXXXXXX, but not Shining Force. Shining + the + [noun] = first-person dungeon crawler. Shining + Force = tactical RPG. Shining + Wisdom = Shining + Soul's inspiration = top-down action RPG. YOU DO NOT CALL IT SHINING FORCE NEO IF IT'S NOT A TACTICAL RPG!!

Good sequels:
Legend of Zelda -- it's not your old top-down action RPG anymore.
Super Mario -- you're lying to yourself if you say you hated Mario 64, even.
Mega Man -- Well, not counting Battle Network, I liked where Zero took it.
Street Fighter -- as an SNK fan it pains me to say this, but Playmore fucked KOF over and Capcom's actually on the rise now

Are you literally retarded

Did you actually play a next-gen Ninja Gaiden game or did you just watch a 30 second gameplay video?

Ninja Gaiden has always been about difficult enemies and tricky platforming combined with ninja skills.
You wanna know what really "changed" so much about the next-gen sequels? They realized "You know what, Ryu Hayabusa is a fucking ninja, he should PROBABLY attack like one."

And that's where the battle system comes in. Which ADDS difficulty, because now you have INTELLIGENT enemies combined with platforming.

And button mashing in Ninja Gaiden will only get you killed anyway. Idiot.

And you must be shrooming, because there's no such thing as a "flashing handkerchief" in any Ninja Gaiden game ever. Except for maybe the pink ribbon you get for playing the game on the easiest difficulty.

It's called "evolution." Get with the fucking times, if they made a 3D Ninja Gaiden game where you didn't get to actually use attack combos and shit, it would be incredibly dull and uninspiring.

Again, not sequels. Completely different story arcs in completely different time periods.

lol, SFIV is not a good sequel. SFIII still towers over it in every fathomable way. SSFIV? Looking great. Still probably won't beat SFIII.

And KOF12 was literally the only hiccup the KOF series has ever had-- and 13 is looking to fix all of the flaws that 12 had (due to being incomplete,) so you can't really rule KOF out like that. KOF has always been a more underground series compared to SF, but KOF has infinitely better gameplay.

what,

sounds like "yo dawg we herd you like sequels so we name a sequel sequel so you can play sequel while playing sequel"

god forbid developers for trying to innovate and try something new. you seem like the kind of fanboy a sonic discussion thread would polute, and that vipershark would love to spend hours arguing about a completely unrelated subjects like the title's font or the colors of a character's eyes.

more like franchises am i right?

PS: also you ban ninja gaiden and shinning force for not being ninja gaiden and shinning force anymore, but then you mention zelda not being a top down action rpg anymore as a "good" sequel.

Pretty much scrolled over this post and agreed entirely. If gameplay innovations are the most fun concept ever, then I'm pretty baffled as to why I've enjoyed gaming less than ever when playing Wii games since the damn system's release and have been having more fun emulating old MSX games. Maybe I just have poor taste, I dunno.

one of the stupidest fucking things said in this thread, jesus christ

"faithfulness" is just a loose, abstract concept having to do with a games title and personal expectations. getting butt-hurt because your expectations are different from what the game is trying to give is completely retarded and has no effect on a games actual quality. its just you being a baby.

breath of fire V: dragon quarter isn't much like it's predecessors (although it still keeps a few central themes) but its a fantastic and unique game regardless.

That's pretty deep flame.

I guess for me it's mostly story, unless the gameplay is too bad for me to stand
