In the same way that all the edits that are allowed onto TSR are good. Quality control.

Do we even allow edits these days?

It depends how much of an edit they are. I have a Sonic Advance edit up, but it was so edited the hell out of that it may as well have been custom.

To the OP: The best advice I can give you right now is to try something custom. Do something very simple at first and gradually work your way up to more complex sprites.

Mr M., you need to eat shit and die. Go crawl under a rock and stay there.
Rockman64, you may not find the most caring audience in the world for sprite edits, let alone a Mario edit, but I can guarantee you right now the second you take Mr Masturbation's advice you are going to crash and burn. Trying to edit a M&L sprite is like a death sentence for spriting, and if you are asking for some help for the original mario sprites, that means that M&L would be excessively difficult by comparison. To be honest, the edit of 8-bit Mario is pretty refreshing. One thing I notice right away is that one animation in the Jump Punch row is touching the Get Up row. I can't tell how they animate right now because I have to go to work. x-x Maybe I'll take a closer look later. You are allowed to have an opinion, same as everyone else. However, you don't have the right to force feed it down other people's throats as if it were the ultimate truth, especially when your opinion is baseless and have been proved wrong by other people.
"The right to have an opinion" isn't either a magic mantra that automatically turns a silly comment into something right. "I have the right to have an opinion" is always invoked by people who thinks that only their opinion matters anyways.
