I dont have time to put these on an image hosting site, but here are two versions of the smash balls... which is better?

As I already said, they look ugly. I would also complain about the really ugly colors, but since you said that you would change them, I'll stick to the ugly shading, ugly shape, ugly etc.
Compared with the other sprites, the ball looks like a piece of paper cutout.

Whats wrong with the shape?

Its a circle, there isnt much to work with.

And its not really shading, its just like the color growing room within, changing the color with a smoother animation, rather than just blinking.

use some of your brain to discover why they're bad, and try improving from there

If someone says it's bad, it's because probably there's something wrong with it, so it's already a criticism. Sure, it's easier if you get some more details about it, but just because he only said that doesn't mean it's 'no good'.

I told him the ball was ugly looking, a post later I explained in detail why did I said the ball was ugly, but either Iceman didn't saw it or he just ignored it to have an excuse to post something here.
Also, during the ball animation some colors are hard to tell apart, especially the red before the yellow cycle.
