i don't get how there being an afterlife would make you want to live, i mean if you know there's free infinite disneyland waiting for you after you die why bother with this imperfect world and just go there faster??
e: and then even if there were some hypothetical reason not to just speed up the process, that is extremely lame and it would make me feel like everything i'm doing is meaningless except for the sake of being good enough to get my ticket into paradise

suicide is a one way ticket to hell fyi. the thought of there being an afterlife secures my status as being alive because if i put an end to it myself i would end up in a world worse than this one. without the forces of heaven and hell vying for my soul i wouldnt have to think twice when "speeding up the process". and again, without an afterlife, there is no "meaning" to living at all, even if it's a superficial meaning.

life is a gift. every single person living today could have been an abortion, or stillborn, or could have even not even been given life in the first place (birth control). why waste it? why spend all the time you can finding "reasons" to live?

you shouldn't need a specific "reason" to live other than to just live your life and be happy. it's what it's there for. it's (generally) what people are fighting overseas for. when you are given life, that means you are given something to live for right there-- the life you've been given. you have friends to live for, you have the world to learn about, you have everything right there.

life is tough. it's about struggle. but that struggle grants you benefits. even when you think "life is shitty" it really isn't and it never is. there are things that may upset you but life in general is not just a toy that you can suddenly decide "i don't want to play anymore, i hate this toy" and throw it away. otherwise you end up a miserable pile of wasted potential, or you end up dead.

i mean for real, if it was 110% proven that after death you simply cease to exist i would honestly consider suicide. i mean, you live life and work and work and then die and its usually a pretty shitty process. most people are like "ohhhhahhh ooo but think about the people your leaving behind." if i was dead and didnt exist an had no thought processes anymore it would make it very hard to care

basically religion is necessary to me, its what keeps me from being a destructive person. if i didn't believe in some sort of redemption or afterlife, it kind of cripples the whole purpose of living this one.

this. I DONT WANT TO WASTE IT, but life fucking sucks to me, i will live it to my full potential but i won't like it. i just wanna see what happens in 40 years when everyone is going to be screwed.. it'll be pretty insane years...

also, I HATE, knowing what the fuck is going to happen in my life, i can already see it now and know what the fuck im going to do in the next 30 years, its pretty much just planned out, you know that your parents and all your loved ones and friends are gonna pass and times will be tough and that fucking sucks man. i mean its really hard to get over pets dying and ill be crushed when my dogs pass, but when some of my family dies, i wont know how to live through that. you need that shit in your life sometimes, ya you can depend on your friends to help ya, but lifes A BITCH and ya gotta live through it.. and when we die, we'll see what happens but we won't know any of it. we'll never find the answer and life remains a mystery. end of chapter.

oh of course suicide is to hell how convenient, why is this, if life only exists for the sake of an afterlife, and don't tell me "your family would be sad" it's way sadder for a loved one to die with no afterlife because you'll never see them again, if someone kills themself in a universe with an afterlife it's like he just got way ahead of you in line and tbh a couple years or decades is nothing compared to the fact that eventually you will be spending forever there (the afterlife), does god literally just say suicide is bad to try to tie up this logical hole abitrarily??
sorry you got such a shitty outlook on life that you think literally the only reason you should live is so you can go to heaven or something (and that this impulse is so strong that you admitted you wish to have this mindset even if the truth actually turns out to be otherwise, like your outlook is based on what you like instead of the truth) and that you can't imagine that people can find meaning otherwise (like i actually am legitimately sorry for you and i imagine shitty things must happen to you for you to have those kinds of thoughts)

btw you always seem to sound kind of touchy (maybe i'm just imagining that tho) whenever this kind of thing comes up so if i've struck a nerve i apologize ahead of time!!

Quote:without an afterlife, there is no "meaning" to living at all, even if it's a superficial meaning.
an afterlife does nothing but obfuscate and confuse "meaning" in the real world - to say that this life has meaning, as an experience, when that meaning is almost entirely derived by what will happen after its over is kind of fallacious.

a trial itself doesn't have any meaning, it only exists to allow for the thing following it to exist - punishment or freedom. everything about it is defined by what comes after. in a manner of speaking, life is not defined by heaven and hell, but heaven and hell are defined by life.

the lack of an afterlife removes this obfuscation: it forces you to consider both the conditions of your existence and the meaning of your life at large. You can't just passively ride on someone elses meaning, you have to create it for yourself - what is it that you want out of life?

to be honest, being forced to live life and doing good things solely so that you don't go to hell sounds like... uh, hell.

Idk
I personally find it easier to live life as a good person and hope there's an afterlife in the end, because then this kinda comes out as a win-win for me
Either I die and nothing else happens, and I can rest easy knowing I made people happy and (because if I don't exist, then I therefore cannot think) I can't regret living with the hope of an afterlife
Or, I can die as a good person and OH HEY AFTERLIFE

but that's just the bible thumper in me. Oh well, it's just a personal preference, after all~
