Vipe, you can build high walls pretty easily by standing on top of the place you want to put the block, looking down, and juping to place the block beneath you. You can go as high as you want this way, but if you're not playing Peaceful mode, be aware of fall damage (your HP slowly regenerates in Peaceful; although a far enough fall will OHKO you).
Between me and my friend we've created a pretty deep mine in the hill, found most ore aside from redstone and diamond , put a high castle wall with a walkway, a moat (work in progress), a watch tower and lighthouse, and an underground cavern with grass, a fountain, and a decently large library.
The time it takes to do stuff in multiplayer is better than halved!

diamond is rare and usually only found by lava, redstone is literally spawned about 6 blocks from the limit of the bottom of the map

I seee. Not that it matters; it appears Smelting doesn't actually work in multiplayer yet; and Redstone probably doesn't function correctly either.

thanks for the tip about high building grooveman, but I already knew that, lol
anyway
i'm currently ~50-60 blocks deep in a 7x7 mine.
So far all i've found aside from stone is iron ore, coal, and gravel.
I want to keep digging down until I hit lava and then flood the mine for fun.

I've found it VERY hard to flood an area in this game. The water physics don't work like that. You'll probably fill the deepest-down room in about 2 blocks of lava/water, with a stream of water/lava leading back to the entry point. If you want to flood an area, you'll have to place water/lava-generationg blocks in the area manually. The bucket SHOULD let you pick up and carry generator blocks.

I started getting bored of only playing on peaceful, so I started a new save in a different slot on Hard.
Day 1 went by and I was able to build an entire house and put torches up all around it with no attacks.
Night 2 comes. I venture out a tiny bit into the darkness and lay two torches. Not even ten seconds later, I hear HISSSSSSSSSSSSS and then i'm dead.
That scared the shit out of me.

after respawning from the last save that I was talking about earlier, i continued on
the next night that came, I was sitting in my house when I happened to look over to my left and OH FUCK A CREEPER
luckily it was outside (I had windows) but it was staring directly at me and following me around as i moved
i somehow got it stuck on the corner of the outer wall of my house, where I was able to attack it from pretty much the maximum distance allowed with a sword and was able to kill it.
I finally found an actual cave system, but haven't gone in yet.
I set up some torches at the entrance, and so far I'm currently working on getting a good base of operations set up.
In addition to my house built at my spawn, I'm also building a set of escape tunnels to make sure that if I get attacked, i can get away.
This tunnel goes from the cave, through a mountain, out into a valley, then through another mountain. I built a small house at the entrance of the cave to hold items and to allow me to do some emergency crafting, and my escape tunnel will get me back outside.
I think the best part of my escape tunnel is that at the part with the valley, it's pretty much monster proof.
The tunnel exits the mountain directly into a hallway encased in glass, which has torches lining the outside. Monsters can't spawn in or near the tunnel because of this, and i even added doors to the sides so that I can grab soil or wood from the valley in an emergency without having to travel all the way to my main house.
It's not complete yet, but if you want to look at it I'll upload my save file.

hey viper, heard that slimes love to swarm caves and they are somehow not affected at all by torches.

Yeah, Slimes are something of a glitched enemy. Last I heard they ignored difficulty settings, can easily over-spawn, and aren't affected by Daylight, so they can agress you above ground.
