I use Paint.Net for the cutting because it dosent have any color loss when you resave the picture. Been using it for at least 2 years now.

GraphicsGale is a pretty pro program; a lot of top-tier spriters use it.
It's a bit outdated, though lots of top-tier spriters also use MSPaint, too so it's entirely preference here Thanked by: Maxpphire

Your program doesn't influence how good you are at pixel art. Pixel art is dependent on your skill as an artist.
Sticking with Paint would be a good option, but I wouldn't avoid GraphicsGale either. I use it and it's very reliable for something so outdated.

MSPaint works for me, and if you can find a copy of Fireworks then GO FOR THAT TOO. I rely on Fireworks for animations, and this is a major part to spriting.
Also Paint 7 also has a nice feature where you can see the actual size of the picture along with the zoomed in size so you can see what each pixel edit does in the final bit. I have yet to use another program besides these three for spriting.

I didn't like Paint.NET at first either, but it's worth making the adjustment, IMO. Paint.NET handles the selection tools a lot differently than MS Paint, and I think that's what might throw people off.
