Should fighting games include a beat em up portion?

Did everyone just kinda miss this post?

Fighting game roots are in Beat em ups. Creating a Hybrid shouldn't be difficult. Half down the options in a fighter and you have yourself the core of your beat em up.

Well I was paying more attention to the gist of the original post: whether or not a fighting game SHOULD include such a portion. Personally I think game devs should stick to making a good fighter or a good beat-em-up (even though those are scarce these days). If you try both you'll either detract from what is supposed to be considered the main product, or you'll have a lesser mode that just feels tacked on, or both.

no, because there's a really big difference between balancing and creating different options for a single player to use against computer opponents (which it doesn't need to be "fair" against) vs balancing and creating different options for 2 human players to fight each other and each have a chance to win, especially when each player can choose from a wide range of asymmetrical options that must still be balanced against each other for use by human players to be as fair as possible

you'd have to change SO much in order to create a worthwhile beat 'em up from a worthwhile fighter (and vice versa) that it's not worth the effort at all whatsoever; it's just a really stupid idea

and i don't get why people want this, do you also think it's weird that a computer doesn't also come with a xbox??? why should a fighter come with a beat em up

There was a special deal where laptops came with an Elite if you were a college student.

Other than that though, they typically are not packaged together.

I'm not saying it has to be packaged together Slouch I'm just saying Tobal 1 and 2 Ehrgeiz were good examples. It can be done, pretending it can't is like pretending every idea is just a copy of another idea, and that nothing is original. It's stupid and pessimistic to say that there is only one or the other. Especially about a topic in which one is only limited to imagination and funds.

Finding competitive hardcore fighting gamers within your area isn't easy especially when those people have jobs or live far away or don't have the money to invest in a ps3. And not every gamer is a fighter. Most of the gaming nerds in my area are RPG addicts. Beat em ups can be fun even to someone who doesn't like fighters.

And there's also the fact that Capcom been to greedy lately. I waited a year to wait for SSF4 as I knew they would make a turbo edition of the game only to my surprised just a few months SSF4 arcade edition was released. I'm not planning on upgrading my SSF4 just to get 2 new predictable shotokan characters to appear who aren't even I consider separate character but EX versions of them. Yun and Yang are OK but I don't think its enough. If I end up buying/upgrading the game I'm just getting the same game with just 2 new characters. The SF4 endings doesn't exactly give a coherent story especially when the last boss Seth shouldn't even be the last boss for some of the other characters like El Fuerte or Makoto. Capcom really doesn't invest much on SF's history. Not everyone cares about a good story but some do like me. Rose is supposed to be dead and Sakura should be older. They should have ended up as secret characters. I think by adding a beat em up part to the game it will make a better storyline and would have something more to offer.

Tekken 6's beat-em-up mode is fantastic, just throwing that out there.

I found it clunky, but far far FAR more tolerable than Tekken 5's attempt. Also I hated the story, it was laaaame.

doesn't matter if you're a college student, if you spend over $700 or something you get it at bestbuy

It's the exact opposite of clunky-- you just didn't get used to target switching.

It's true. Very Sad Those gargoyles on the train can go screw themselves.

The gargoyles on the train are a different story-- they're just broken.

It was made easy. I am not sure where you live, but this should help you out. This is where all of the good gamers go to meet up with people in thier local areas. Try to see if you can find one in your area.Wink
