How is he more recognizable now? He was the hero of an arcade game and really didn't do much after that. What did DK Jr. do in the time being that makes him more recognizable now than he was before?

You can't compare them. You can't even call that a star of his own game, I'd never heard of him until I got the free game with the ambassador pass. And I don't even like the game.

DK Jr was one of my all time favourite videogames as a child whose only console was the Adam Coleco Vision.  
Also correct me if I'm wrong but (I looked it up and I'm not) at the point of Super Mario Karts release DK had never been a playable character, while DK Jr had been.

Yeah the only Mario characters who had been playable up until that point were Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and DK Jr.
Koop, I think you missed what I was saying. I'm not saying DK Jr is more relevant now, but he IS more recognizable now-- because of his age.
Back then lots of people didn't even know there was a Jr., or they didn't care. Then he got put in Mario Kart + Mario Tennis and now more people are aware.
That's all I'm saying.

I honestly don't care who they add (except babies), as long as they don't cut the important ones.
Queen Bee is a WTF addition to the roster, but you are not obligated to play as her (unless they re-introduce Mission Mode). Some might want to play as her, so her addition is only better. If you don't like her, just deal with it.
I can finally play as Shy Guy without Download Play. That is what I care about.

Except that they totally did.
In fact, DKJR was so recognizable at that time that he starred in his own cartoons. Right along with Q*Bert, Mario, DK SR, Frogger, and Pac-Man. The video game all-stars of the time.
Unfortunately there's a lot of disconnect as far as the DK continuity goes. Nobody's really quite sure if the current Donkey Kong is actually an adult JR or not. I would love to see JR show up in another spin-off title, but the chances are unlikely and it's in no way a deal-breaker.

I don't think DB is in, but Koopa is in there so need to worry about that.
