Different stages? Different enemies? Different power-ups?

Different game.

And still the same game play, graphics, and basic concepts within the game.

More or less I am using "same" very loosely here. Given that I am aware that there will be minor differences to the last few games (which I doubt will be very much anyways.)

What's wrong with the same gameplay? The only problem I have with the NSMB series post DS is the flat graphics, but I don't really see why it's so terrible to continue using gameplay that has proven popular and fun.

Why would you make changes to a winning team?

You must admit this is very lazy on Nintendo's part. It looks like they took NSMB and made new levels and powerups. They didn't build a game from the ground up.

Simply put, the New Super Mario Bros. series was fine for the first two, but now we need to move on to something better.

Seriously, at a glance the first sceenshot I saw looked like the first screen of the ORIGINAL New Super Mario Bros with a tanuki suit added. It is a really, REALLY bad idea to try and talk about your new game when showing something that looks ALMOST exactly the same.

That's just my first impression from a single screenshot. It really does look lazy, like Koopaul said, but I only saw that one screen. I'd love to see something new and exciting done with the series, like if you get to World 8 and then after the final boss it turns out you've only beat half of the game, and then there are 8 NEW worlds to explore. THAT would make it kick ass.

Unironically, I would like examples of "something better". When people want/expect a sequel, I believe they actually just want more levels to play and maybe some different power ups? A radically different game is something else. Like Super Mario 3D Land, not New Super Mario Bros.

I guess SMB3 IS radically different from the first one, but well, the first one doesn't have that much content either. SMW isn't that different from SMB3 in my opinion, they're basically the same mechanic.

the changes from Super Mario Bros 1 through 3 were more than aesthetical. each game redefined the previous one while still carrying the iconic elements that their previous incarnations set, such as mushrooms, koopas and characters.

then we got "new" Super Mario Bros and it was an okay game wich was meant to be nothing but an accesible game to share with those who would find themselves having a hard time understanding something more complex, aka, casual gamers.

then "new" super mario bross "wii" came out and it was basically the exact same thing(a port), only overhauled graphically to fit the console it was being played. major improvement was the 4 player co-op, with the same mechanics of every mario game ever made to the date. mechanics that are apparently set in stone.

then super maio 3D land came out and they actually worked a bit towards adding elements to the gameplay to both appeal the casual gamer to those who played the original three ones so you would actually find some value in playing a game you have been playing for the last 30 years with no particualr interest than baby-steps gameplay.

then, we got another port.

tl;dr:Its mario. its not meant to redesing itself, its meant to just be there and be mario, that game you can basically ask anyone to play.

Not at all.

Not only does Super Mario World have different physics (so it feels and plays different) but it also has a totally new visual style, takes place in a brand new setting, offers new mechanics like Spin Jumping and throwing shells up, most of the enemies are new, Yoshi riding, alternate routes on the map, ect.

The game was very much it's own thing without radically changing the formula.

They didn't make a Super Mario Bros. 3 with Yoshi. They made a completely new game.

This is not the case. I want a new Mario game.

That's not true either. Most Mario games feel like a different experience. And they are.

I can't say I've been playing the same game for 30 years, but I have been playing the same series for that long.

taking into consideration we're speaking about the platformer branch of mario games.

it would be stupid to make a comparision between SMB3 and SMB64

True but amongst the side scrollers you could see a great leap between SMB1 - SMB3 - SMW (they are very different)

Then after that there were no real Mario sidescrollers. Finally New Super Mario Bros comes along, and it offered something new by bringing in the wall jump and ground pound mechanics of the 3D Mario games.

It wasn't quite enough though since everything else was pretty much like the past sidescrollers. With the same world archetypes, same way to finish the stage (flagpole), a lot of things were the same but with better graphics and stuff.

But I was okay with that because the title "New Super Mario Bros." let me know that this was a homage to the past titles. The new mechanics made revisiting those old things fun again. So it's okay to do that... once in a while.

See I thought this was going to be a one time thing. They want to make a new game that's like their old ones that's fine, that's cool. It's been a very long time so revisiting that stuff will be neat. That was cool with Donkey Kong Country Returns. But don't make a habit of it!

We've been reintroduced, now lets move on! Make a platformer with all sorts of new shit in it. Something visually unique and surprising!

As much as I hate to admit it, I agree with Koopaul.

This needs to be less "expansion pack: the game" and more "completely new mario game"

SMB > SMB3 > SMW may have used the same base formula, but there's no way you can convince me that they were the same game. They all had completely different graphical styles and each one built upon the strengths of the previous game while adding in its' own fun, new mechanics to play with.

This, on the other hand, is literally "hey guys let's take the existing mario ds engine and just put new stages in it (and i guess maybe like one new powerup) and then charge full price for it" and so was NSMB Wii. Yeah, NSMBW had co-op and some new powerups, but overall it was still just the same game with a small amount of new features. (Though I suppose I find NSMBW to be a bit more acceptable as far as being a rehash since it doesn't try to be anything except an enhanced console release of a previous game and is literally just NSMB (for the Wii)) For this new game to call itself a true sequel just seems wrong.
Unfortunately I'll end up buying it anyway since I enjoy the games but I still find it incredibly lazy on Nintendo's part.

I know it's a lot easier said than done, but really, how hard is it for them to make an original game?
What happened to Nintendo's magic?

Eh, to me the diference in styles was just graphical progression to be honest, now they've pretty much settled on a style, so I would expect anything too diferent for a new 2D Mario game?

But I get where all this is coming from, I mean, I kinda feel the same way too. I don't exactly feel ripped off but, I feel like you guys said, that they kinda just added new leves to the previous game, which should be alright in my book (I mean, it's a sequel or something, I liked Super Mario Galaxy 2 because of this), but it does feel kinda...meh. Yeah, my SMB3 = SMW argument wasn't good and you have good points Koopaul. I sure hope something's different is in this game, but seeing the August release date, I don't know. This may be part of what Iwata (i think) said once about releasing big franchise games more regularly as opposed to once in a while.

Considering the screenshots, and details. I think it's just another remake.

can i facepalm at above post now

in a more serious note, I think that the difference from SMB>3>SMW is big indeed; they share the same principles but they play really different. This new game here might have new things, but visually it's all the same, and probably they won't be changing much of the physics.

Anyway this is my point of view after seeing 4 screenshots, so things may change (or not) in the future.
