New Super Mario Bros. 2
Well, um, the coin gimmick is only on the 3DS game, which has no 4-player multiplayer ):

Point is it shouldn't be that hard to get anyone playable in that sort of game.

I remember that game. I remember it being hard as fuck for me when I was a kid. I built up FIFTY lives before going to Wario's Castle, and I lost them ALL. I used to really suck at certain video games back in the day though, but maybe it was due to the shitty Gameboy screens which were SO fucking hard to see. This is something I remember the most: the commercial.

I really think they should show Wario and even Waluigi a little more love in the standard games in the franchise. I mean, what New Super Mario Bros Wii is telling us is that BASICALLY the Toads can do all the shit Mario and Luigi do, but they just don't feel like it. LAZY FUCKS!

Oh, what I forgot to mention was the feeling of dread you have going through Super Mario Land 2. You can go to the OUTSIDE of the palace any time you want, but to get in you need to beat every world and get all the coins, obviously. However, every time you go there there's a storm going on outside, and up above you can see Wario's silhouette creeping back and forth. Really he has even more of a presence as a villain in a game than Bowser usually does for that reason alone.

As much as I love the Koopalings I really hope they do something interesting with them this time, even if it's something as crazy as jumping into the Yoshi Safari robots of old or something. Just anything. It was great to see them in NSMB Wii, but now it's time to make them awesome.

I love Wario, but I'm not really keen on seeing him in this kind of game working with Mario. He has too strong a personality to be done justice as "just another playable character" and would end up stealing the show. And Waluigi can stay far away from the main series as far as I'm concerned. As far as I know NSMB 2 is only 2 player but with the Wii U game having one Toad doesn't bother me but having 2 does. 4 player Co-op seems to be pretty lazy with characters lately, with Rayman also doing the "2 cool guys and those other dudes."

Why not just make Bowser steal something else besides Peach and make Peach playable again, SMB 2 style? And Wart? Hell yeah I'd love to see him return. As said by others before me the current Mario Universe owes a lot to SMB 2 (including Luigi looking different) and it would be great to see some more stuff from that game return.

Wario shook the villain image a long time ago. And I'm glad. Now he's greedy bastard who'll do anything for gold and glory.

Which also makes a good villain in my opinion. Someone willing to stomp a bitch down for a pocket full of loose change. It's even better that way because he could switch back and forth from being a hero and villain to whatever is most advantageous to what HE wants.

Still, you're right, I doubt we'd ever see Wario as a legit villain presence ever again.

He's what in TVtropes calls, Chaotic Neutral, while Mario is Lawful Good.

Bowser is either Lawful Evil or Neutral Evil.

I'm pretty sure those were D&D rules before they were TVtropes.

Also, I'd play the shit out of a Mario themed D&D.
Let's add Legend of Zelda to that list of D&D themes.

NintenD&D.

I'd make that game. But I'd never finish it. Currently working on that tSRbound game again.
Noticed the sunset and nighttime levels, not liking the fact that they're just backgrounds as opposed to actually changing the shading and stuff on Mario but hey, something new in terms of Mario, right

Also I had an idea similar to Gold Mario back in '07, so I wasn't really impressed with it either

Still, doesn't look terrible and the whole coins gimmick seems interesting. Mario himself looks kind of weird though and I can't place my thoughts on why... he just seems off. Probably the fact that he's still a 3D model in a 2D sprite world.

To be truthful, that's a really bad excuse not to have him be a villain again.

True he is chaotic neutral, that doesn't mean he can't be the bad guy again given that he's greedy. If anything he could be a recurring mini-boss which would be pretty damn interesting for this game. It'd be better than having bowser jr. and the koopalings being every single boss.

I can see Wario being in a Kirby game (being a mini-boss every now and again trying to steal your treasure or something) before having a role in a "proper" Mario game.
It just doesn't seem like something Nintendo would do, which is a shame as yes - your right, it would be cool.

If they got the writing right Wario would also work really well in a Mario and Luigi game, possibly refreshing the franchise if a 4th ever came to be. Nintendo seems to like keeping them a part now days though and if he was going to be in NSMB 2 or SMB U I think he would have been shown.

I'm guessing they don't want him playable as he wouldn't be able to shoulder barge/ram, pick up an throw things as it would be significantly different gameplay for him. Yes they could just make him not ram etc. but this is Nintendo and I can see them refusing to change how Wario plays in order to fit him in a game being a reason for his exclusion.

People have been playing as Wario for years now, and it would just seem awkward to have Mario fight him again for what is probably a dumb reason...

Case in point:
