I've tried changing the left leg and skirt again.

I guess my understanding of anatomy really isn't that strong; that legs still look strange to me.
I changed the face a tad this time again, I don't really know how to get any more definition in that
small of a space.

Hmm the face seems messed up now, what happened to the neck???
I say redo the whole head and start by giving it a neck. Nothing wrong with going back from scratch.

The back leg looks broken I say raise the foot higher behind the leg and change its angle slightly.

Also done (guess i finished earlier than i thought...)

Those deviate from the original sprites pallete unfortunately.(shouldn't be hard to go back and fix that however)

Does that mean I have to get the exact pallete from the originals sprites? I think it might make my custom values feel a little bit weird.
Thanked by:
Yes, you have to use colors from the original sprite.

Here is the pallete change for X.

Using a rip from the game, I made some use for it as a possible mockup if my animation plan doesn't go well (the training dummy was made using the in-game pallete).

Even though her face and head look wonky, it's definitely looking more like she has a lower jaw and a proper neck now. Still needs some work obviously, like her face looking too puffy, especially her right cheek. Shave a few pixels from the bottom right side of the face fo sho. The new positioning of her left ankle makes it look like it's broken. The legs and knees look more natural now though.

The area under her right breast suffers from a bit of clutter, it's a bit unreadable, but nothing really bad. It seems like that her right arm is hidden a bit too much behind that part of her chest as well.

Oop. Completely forgot to upload the final version of Umihara.

I say final because I'm done fidgeting with it. It isn't perfect, but I'm
pleased enough with it. Thanks to everyone for the C&C

the reason this is one of the best entrants so far isn't just for sheer technical skill; a lot of this challenge comes down to picking a good sprite with an easily translatable design that isn't very cluttered to work off of, and also key is picking a sprite with a palette that looks good. you guys should really take advantage of the SNES's bright, multi tone palette and those of you (i don't think there are any..) should be utilizing those awesome, dark genesis colors.

So it ends 8/12, I got all day to make something nice then. Don't worry, I'll edit this post once I have something to show rather than making another post.

EDIT2: I got a nasty headache so I'll just post the mugshot...
(Mine is on the right >. I didn't want to update the old mugshot so I went for new angle and stuff)

Any feedback is appreciated!

The line work is kind of jagged, and his face looks kinda long and effeminate, might be because he has almost no chin here. There's less detail on his ear dealie than the old sprite too. The light source seems to change for his right shoulder and his torso, although I assume you were trying to make it look like his face was casting a shadow on his shoulder, which could use some work.

I like the hair shading and the expression.

Thanks that's some good feedback, I'll work off your notes and make it better Smile

I'm only good at drawing bishonen/feminine faced boys so my bad lol. I'll define his face more and make the structure more masculine.

I hope it's improved xD

it looks like his nose is too long.

I thought I'd make a quick edit:
You may notice that you set the eyes quite far apart, whereas in the original sprite, they are closer: this is due to the angle of the nose. The nose you've done is straight, from the brow/bridge to the tip. However, if you look more closely on the sprite, the brow is quite prominent and then the bridge appears deeper inside the face.
As Keiang pointed out, I think the size of the mouth is making the character look younger, so making it bigger will set the face to more adut proportions. The same applies to the chin, and this is the feature, along with the jawline, that will help us determine the gender more easily: a small, fine chin is a feminine tendency, and a bigger, blockier chin is a masculine tendency.
I hope this helps!
