Super Mario Bros custom tileset
#91
please don't edit, its helps no one when you do,
I'd make an exception for people who can already sprite fairly well (meaning they could at least improve / sprite to similar quality of the original),
no offence, but you need to improve quite a bit before your capable of that,
stick to customs and maybe reference other sheets to try and get a better understanding of other artists approach but for the sake of improving stick to customs.

it's not even edited.

It's recolored.

guess what's worse than editing (hint: it starts with 'reco' and ends with 'ring')

As I told you before, if you have no idea of what you are doing, you will hardly improve, at all. Pixelart IS NOT drawing in a paper, you have techniques that make it specifically pixelart.

Pixelart requires, as the name implies, pixel-perfect precision, every dot must have a purpose. By working with a smaller unit of image, your details must be perfectly readable and considerable smooth on the eyes.

you don't need that pair of img tags. just do this next time.

its nothing to get upset about and I know it seems harsh,
and I know this next statement may get a bit under your skin as it sounds far too obvious and a bit rude, but its still the truth,
the difference between being bad at something and being good at it, is knowing what your doing wrong.

whether anyone likes it or not, until your told what your doing wrong you will keep doing those things wrong,
one of the tough points of artistic mediums be it audio or visual or tastey biscuits its getting to know what your doing wrong without being told it, its the biggest hurdle you'll face and until you get good enough you'll have to listen to what people are saying about your work and try to understand why their saying it and what you can do to stop them saying it (short of a killing spree)

You are not supposed to be mad or sad! lick it up and improve.

We aren't here to shoot down your work without valid reasons. There are issues you need to work on, I've pointed them out. That's our job. Are you going to get mad at our job? I don't get paid for the C+C I give; I took time to analyze them and I think you should read it calmly and understand why you got negative criticism. You DID NOT come here to get praised, and we will not if your work isn't worthy of it.

I might've sounded harsh on criicism, but sometimes a shake like this is needed to make you realize you're tripping on the same mistake over and over. Read this, count to 10, drink a glass of water and think about this situation. I am sure you can improve, just like anyone else. Be humble and accept the criticism.

Or not, you aren't forced to accept it. Your call, though.

Not to be a dick or come off back-seating here, but that comment right here is childish.

Gorsal and everyone else who actually bothered telling you how to make your sprites better is completely right in giving you criticism and the fact that you're reacting to practically what everyone says makes me question whether or not you truly want to improve (And to be fair, I have been in your position before. I know where you are coming from)

Look, we get that you want to improve, but you are accomplishing nothing but asking us questions on how to. That's not the way to go. You just have to do it and try it for yourself. In fact if I can tell you one thing is for damn sure you need to stop posting so many sheets and focus on one set of sprites. That's another thing you'll have to do to break this little pattern you are going through.

If you honestly can't start listening and actually do what people are recommending you do for your work not only are you not actually improving but to be honest, you are kind of wasting everyone's time.

Gor is one of those people who wants to preserve pixel art as a high quality art. Don't get offended by his harsh criticism. If he put it in nicer terms, it wouldn't stick to your brain because the brain responds 80% more to negativity.

Here is a exerciser I will give you.

you have to work on a Mario sprite that is 30 x 30 using only 8 colors or less. With such a small space you wont be able to draw it out and color it in, but you will have no choice but to make each pixel function. The color limitation is so that you will learn what it means to show value. I was going to have you do 4, but I wanted to go easy on you.

It would've been a bit more tolerable to me if he didn't point out EVERY SINGLE MISTAKE I EVER MADE since taking your guys' advice. so, yeah, I have a bit of a reason to be ticked off.

Maybe you want to read the Spriting & Pixel Art Rules and chill down.

The main purpose of this board is to get comments on how to improve your sprites. So, you should be happy someone made the effort of making such an elaborate collection of flaws. This way, you have all the points at hand and can quickly see what there is to improve - and there even are tips on how to do so and explanations so you can understand why they're not good this way.

I don't know what you're expecting, if you want praise and buttpats, you're probably kinda at the wrong place.
I suggest you read through this thread from the post I linked to, onward.

Its 30X30 I just stretched it to make it bigger and easier to see
(I used different saturation in my sprite than 240 [the max amount] for all of you who keep saying I don't)
Thanked by:
well, aa(anti-aliasing) doesn't really work very well for smaller sprites, the label on mario's cap doesn't need an outline and the red square isn't needed, the shape of the hat is a bit off, proportion could be worked on a bit, and the outlines for the eyes need a little work.

if you are going to post a re-sized verison, then you should also show us the normal size, so that we can tell better how it looks.
adding onto what Ebilninja said, and IDK if this has been said too many times before (forgive me if it has), but you should avoid the anti-aliasing around the outer edges of the sprite altogether, as it is not benefiting it. shading and other enhancements like that are better left for after you get the outlines and base colors in good shape.
from what I can tell however the pixels look cleaner, not doubled or as messily placed as before so you are progressing steadily! just need to work on anatomy (which is a bothersome subject, believe me), study colors, and all that good stuff. Wink

Do i need to make something bigger or smaller?
Thanked by:
we prefer to see a sprite in native resolution, so if your going to post it sized up like you have at least show us a regular sized one so we can see how the sprite reads.
EDIT: EG. you say that sprite is 30x30 post it as 30x30 without the stretching,
should we need to see it pixel for pixel we'll copy it into our preferred editing program and take a look ourselves. Smile
