Inafune's pulling a Hironobu Sakaguchi with this...The Last Story 1up'd all of the modern Final Fantasies, so why shouldn't this be a similar case? Classic devs know what's up.

I don't have the money to back this, but I sure hope it'll make the 2.5 million milestone. When the game is available on Wii U, my brother will have to deal with the fact that the little memoryspace he has on the second-hand, standard 8G Wii U of his will have to reserve some room for this masterpiece in the making.

I'm just saying he could make the game look less like Mega Man.

No one is saying that this is "Megaman"

This is only a spiritual successor, that in no way shape or form makes it exactly like Megaman. Sure it holds some core concepts from that game but there will be things that will differentiate this from the Megaman games.

I kinda saw it coming when I heard the story behind it. Since Capcom owns the rights to Megaman, he can't directly work with his baby the way he wants to. So the next best thing is to make a look alike, who has similar abilities and is in a similar setting.

There's not a damn thing Capcom can do about it, because you can't sue for someone using inspiration~

Like if I somehow got into the big companies, and someone somehow managed to get the rights to Sparkz and I couldn't use him, I'd make another character similar in every way, with a different design. FIGHT DA MACHINE~

I'm pretty sure they technically can in this case considering this is more of a blatant rip-off than a game inspired by Mega Man.

Don't get me wrong; I really like the idea of modernized classics and I like Mighty No. 9 so far.

Inafune could possibly dodge copyright completely if he was to market the game as a Mega Man parody instead of a "new Mega Man", but that would diminish the game's vision.

I mean you're right in that if he was just inspired by Mega Man that wouldn't be sue-able, but this is way past inspiration.

Still, they can't do anything. Think about Golden Axe Warrior versus the first Legend of Zelda. It's pretty obvious it's a direct clone, just with a few added and changed things. Nintendo can't sue over that, and didn't. Now if any of their copyrighted assets worked their way into the game, THEN they can sue.

Throwing a pair of copper coins in the mix, I'd say that calling a game a ripoff may not be the best choice of words, if anything, I'd say Mighty 9 looks like a neat clone.

Besides, we've seen worse ripoffs than this. Also if I recall back in the 90's any video game anthro hero with an attitude was considered a sonic ripoff.

This comes to mind for me.

On topic: I would normally be kinda pissed about how blatant this is, but considering that Capcom has been shitting on Inafune's legacy in recent years (right about after he called them out on their bullshit IIRC), I'm all for Mighty No. 9. Not only is it shaping up to be a pretty solid game, but it's a deliciously giant middle finger to Capcom.

You know, this might be best in the long run. Most of the time if some one, even the creator of a long established series wants to give it a reboot and change things up, there's going to be a lot of resistance because "it's not the same as the old thing". As a spiritual successor though, Megaman can still continue be the megaman we used to know, and Mighty No.9 can be the megaman Inafune wanted, possibly for a while.

Megaman was the sum of both his work, others work, corporate influence, and technical limitation. It can never be the megaman Inafune may want it to be now, not without gutting the series. Yeah, even the corporate meddling helped create the parts we love of the series.

Mighty No.9 can be megaman without all that stuff, and as a different thing, it doesn't have to have that at all.

really sorry for bumping but here is some news you may be shocked about, not sure if anybody has heard this but if Capcom has the best proposal for Inafune he would consider turning it into Megaman game instead Sad

I really hope he keeps it his own thing. I can just see the whole thing stagnating if Capcom gets their teeth into it.

Either that or they learned their lesson and might let them do their thing. I was kind of excited to have a spiritual successor to Mega Man though. XD

Kickstarter backers could actually group up and sue Inafune if he did that. He's not allowed to go back on major things.

It wouldn't be the first time someone tried that, though.

I believe we must trust Inafune in any situation. He knows what the fans want, he knows what he and his team wants, and he's not going to just let Capcom destroy that.
Mighty No. 9 is a Megaman game that is not Megaman. Should the unlikely event of Beck becoming Megaman be happening, I wouldn't be bothered much. It looks like a fun Megaman-like game either way.

If this game does well, it's a huge bargaining chip that Inafune can use to come back to Capcom and take the Megaman reins from them.
