You know, I once thought Earthbound was kinda meh. Then I gave it a go a couple of days ago.
I've only gotten to Giant Step and I already think it's the best game I've ever played in a long time. WHY THE CORN DID IT TOOK SO LONG TO GET A VIRTUAL CONSOLE RELEASE?

I like to think that I can like some bad games because of brand/franchise loyalty, but certain abominations like Sonic '06 can't be defended by me.
On the other hand, Sonic Advance (which I'm not saying is universally hated) is one of my favorite games ever, but there's nothing AMAZING about it (I like the music and graphics though). It's not BAD, but not OUTSTANDING.
Yet I ADORE it. :Y

plus it didn't sell well outside of Japan
and only got really popular around 5-10 years after it was pretty much forgotten
plus NOA likes to avoid issues like localizing Mother 3, let alone an anthology of Earthbound and it's previous game, which never made it out of Japan either
Really it's a bunch of things all combined to make one big mess of different opinions.

Super Mario Bros 2. My family didn't understand it, but it's one of my favorites.
Also, the Zelda series; we had the original Zelda on NES and we also didn't understand that one, but I got into Zelda after playing Twilight Princess and now I like them all (that I've played; there's a lot I haven't.)
Sonic and the Secret Rings... I rented it years ago so my memory is fuzzy but I do remember liking it, but it got bad reviews.

No
nothing redeems this game
Well, while I don't have a real say on this since I haven't played it myself, I gave this game a thought of why it was bad.
It's good and all, until Things. The way Things are handled, the fact that they're OP and the game forces you to use them, even on bosses, is what absolutely ruins it. It should have been called Thing Star, because Things overshadow the real gimmick of the game. Thing stickers are stupid and should never have existed.

The entire battle system was ruined
The timing was altered, you can run out of standard attacks like jump & hammer, and no damn partners.
There is NO incentive to battle, you don't level up anymore so it's just a huge waste of health and time.
You can get money just from selling the infinitely respawning stickers over and over so why even battle?
and that's why sengir posted it in the 'games you like that everyone hates' thread. (heh!)

I don't know if that's really what the thread's about, though.
