while I understand that you did your best, I knew that this was going to happen sooner or later.

Being frank, I regret creating this project in a way. Not because it sucked or that I disliked the idea. The idea was good, and people actually took their time to create their assets. I like that and I hope to see more coming from you all in order to finish this project.

But what really gets me is the fact that this did not have any visible change in the last 3 years since i created this thread. I see this project as my child, it's a creation i really took time to craft, see all the assets, the music I composed, the gameplay elements. I do blame a little of this on myself because I never wrote a design doc down to organize, and that I didn't chat much with robo9 to iron out the game.

I don't want to blame anyone or call out names because everyone has a life and I understand that. It would be selfish of me to demand progress of the game all the time, and I respect your time. However years of nothing is humiliating, disappointing and frustrating at once, because I'm seeing my project be liked by everyone, getting activity and new assets from people who joined here and yet, see it stagnated, without any visible change other from mockups I could make with ms paint in 5 or 10 minutes.

This project has no structure whatsoever due to the long time stuck in dev hell, and this is my fault, and I am willing to correct it. Again, thanks for trying, Robo9, but I'm still really sour at all this. Whoever is going to takeup the coding on this, please contact me, and I'll gladly try to put tFR on the track. Just promise me you'll work on it, just promise me you'll support me on this project, that I'll see what I can do (other than the sheets, assets and music that I had already produced all in 2011).

As a hobbyist designer, I don't really expect to get into serious game projects anytime soon (especially when it involves tSR people). Making games is my past time, much like how many of you enjoy yourselves playing games or reading. My way of having fun is creating. I get really happy when my game idea is picked up by someone because this means he/she is interested on my idea, that my idea means something. This is the motivational boost I depend on to produce things.

I don't even want good programmers. I just want a programmer that is passionate about what he/she does, and that is capable to support me constantly through the whole work. Making a game is not simply me pitching sprites and idea, then hoping for someone to grab it and code it. There needs to be talk, we need to walk together. If you want to create a game without ever doing this step, then I think this won't work.

It's just because many of my ideas were so left out for a long time, that I don't really feel like creating anymore. There comes a time where you get tired of pitching balls that are never hit. So if you're really considering programming this, please consider that I've been put on hold for the longest time, too.

was robo9 coding this game from the ground up?

we could use an existing fighter engine, too, like 2D fighter maker 2nd. since this is our site's little baby, i'm sure no one will complain, but furthermore if it turns out half-decent the fact we're using this engine could garner the game additional attention.

sure, it's a 13 year old engine okay yeah but it's same one used by tomoaki sugeno to make vanguard princess.

and there's uh, a few other games running the engine i won't mention
and many japanese dojinshi circles have been using it for years (up to this day, even) to make games in it.

and its max resolution is pretty small - which, considering the format we're using (the tiniest sprites ever) that actually could be an advantage for us.

and like, if robo9 has like hitbox data and shit we could more or less just carry that data over to whatever we work on the game in.

Well, I'm certainly not giving up.

I think Kosheh's idea of using an existing game engine will allow us to concentrate more on our characters and game mechanics, rather than making a game engine from scratch. We could also pursue the game in GM or in a similar program.

Either way - if we are to continue working on this as an actual game, we should make the code/build/whatever accessible to everybody, like open a public dropbox or something. I don't think Robo and ploaj are the only competent programmers on this forum, and this way it takes the weight of that responsability off their shoulders. Those who feel able to chip in can, and hopefully each little step each person makes will get us closer to getting a decent playable build.

So yeah, let's decide on what we use for the engine and from there start up an account to share progress on.

This engine looks very interesting, I especially like how you can see where the hitboxes are going to be. I don't COMPLETELY understand everything, but I am currently transferring the only complete sheet I found first into the program (Chris2balls), and from there I'll see what it does. O:

Now that you mention this, would it be too much to ask to put the completed assets on the first post? It's kind of a bother to dig through the topic when you want to look up references.

Huh, I remember a year or two ago bringing up the idea of using a premade engine (MUGEN was my vote at the time) but the general consensus was that it would be best to do it from the ground up. I agree that a premade engine would allow people to just kind've pitch in random bits and pieces, considering that they're generally pretty easy to use.

Another advantage of a premade engine is, if we get more than one person helping out with coding, different people can work on coding different characters, and at the end everything can be imported together and tweaked by a single person. If it was worked on from the ground up then it would be almost impossible to accomplish something like that.

If somebody doesn't mind, could we get a compilation together of all the completed or mostly completed sheets, and then we can update the first post? I plan to save them myself, because what I'm doing right now (whether or not we decide to use this engine) is converting them into that fighter maker Kosheh posted. It'll take some time just getting the frames put into the engine, let alone deciding what frames do what and where, so at the very least we'll have them converted and then can work from there.

I am legitimately excited about this, it seems like this is going to be our best bet for getting this off the ground. o:

I'd imagine that networking capabilities might have had something to do with wanting to do it from scratch. After all, it's a community project, so everyone just wants to play with others from the forum. I did read somewhere that a program called LunaPort allows fighting games made with this engine to be played online (thought it's probably a hassle to set up), so maybe that can alleviate that issue, if this option were to be chosen.

IIRC there's an indiegogo campaign by the community (on Steam) being worked on to bring online play DLC to Vanguard Princess. If it's actually successful and enough money is tossed at the effort I'd assume they'd probably release whatever they created for use with other games using the FM2K engine.

im gonna admit right now, i've got like 18 hours clocked in on strip fighter 4
not even because of the h-game elements (i actually could never do any of the rape moves mostly because 1) i can never build up that much meter in a match and 2) their inputs are really stupid and i mess up anyway) but because it's actually got a solid engine, and a lot of characters with pretty solid movesets (there are two twins [a loli and shota] that literally play verbatim like abel; it's hilarious)

even studio s' own character/self-insertions (acme iku, S, jin tendoh) are actually surprisingly solid characters in their own right

i think i'm gonna try to get type wild tonight and see how well that handles

I guess you guys do need a programmer. And some structure.

I'm a professional programmer, made a half dozen game jam games, two full years of projects courses as team leader for college level design, and I've been programming for the better part of two decades.

Shit, I knew Game Maker when it was still called Animo. I've made games in bunches of languages, and looking at this project... While Game Maker isn't perfect, it is something that people can easily learn and to organize the resources. Particularly if there are few programmers, it might be ideal for branch development of the expected caliber.

I dunno what I'm trying to say and don't want to step on any toes, but I could do it. I've wanted to build a fighter before but graphics were always so numerous that I never had the resources to do so. Seems like a perfect solution to me. I'd use Game Maker and comment my coding explicitly that way if I ever had to step down (like Robo wants to) it'd be easy enough to get the important stuff to the next guy who comes along.

If this sounds appealing, I could whip up a demo of the mechanics relatively simply.

The other thing is establishing a solid design document. I'll read through the thread beginning to end to get a solid idea of where you're at so I'm certain that I could do what you guys want. But from the last ten pages or so, it doesn't seem beyond my ability. But I'll read and confirm while waiting for a reply.
