Anyway the free game download is a sweet deal. Nintendo really hopes this game will sell consoles and is doing all they can to make sure it does. I'm confident it will be a hit.

but there were two other instances of a "metal" character in that trailer, mario and luigi respectively

its a temp shield item of some sort

unless someone can confirm with an actual response from nintendo as to a "Metal Peach" being included as a playable character

I've never followed the development of a Mario Kart game, but do they usually reveal the whole roster before release or is there a chance of numerous veterans being unrevealed hidden characters?

Previous games have had hidden characters (the last one I kept track of was the Wii one though). This roster looks pretty complete, though. Not to say it's impossible for something else to be added, but it does look pretty packed. If they did add more secret characters, I wouldn't be opposed to 5 or 6 more (which would keep the layout symmetrical).
