THE FIGHTERS RESOURCE - Official Thread

That being said, making a new thread or whatever is up to Gorsal since this is still his project and he's in charge.

The point of midnight moe is that your character cosplays as a relevant anime character.
So you find an anime girl that's relevant (in midi's case a squirrel girl) and then genderbend/cosplay your character in that outfit.

I don't mean to argue, but what do you mean by "relevant"? Far as I can tell, the example of me is the only example. I can't think of any anime girls that would be relevant to most of these other characters.

Neko's boxing glove should have extremely small startup time or else it kind of defeats the point of the movie I think (and that one guide somebody posted said the same thing)

It's preferable that they be relevant (similar in some way), but historically they don't have to be

If they don't share some similarity, then they should probably be a character from a popular anime that's known for being "moe," or just an extremely popular anime character. You might want to ask whether or not your suggestion's been taken and whether or not it's a good idea before trying it.

edit: oh I should note that most current midnight moes are AT LEAST similar in color scheme or outfit, even if it's a pretty loose connection. The ones that aren't similar probably have some inside joke behind them (e.g. gilbert as yui, viper as what's her face from SNSD). So basically you should have something similar in some way.

But I wouldn't pick her anyway; I'm not at all familiar with that character, so whoever I pick will be someone I know and am a fan of. Sorry.

Just so you know, I was kidding when I said I would be disappointed if you didn't pick her. It was a suggestion, more than anything (to be honest, she's the only anime squirrel girl I know of). You're free to pick whoever you feel is most fitting.

I don't see what's the big deal with them originating in a video game, as long as they're part of an anime, but I'll roll with it if that's the rules.

Well, it's not like it's a new thing that everyone wants in when there's a surge of popularity. After all, only like 5% of those people get to complete their sheets, so it at least keeps the discussion going.

I do think a new topic is in order, since all the relevant resources are all scattered (well, I suppose CBL put them in one place ten pages ago or so).

You can count me off the list since I've moved onto Unity. This allows me a useful outlet for animating in 3D. That's really why I created my tFR WIPs in the first place -to have an outlet for animating from programming. I really wanted to do 3D animating, but that was functionally useless to me when I was only using XNA.

It's up to everyone else, but given the characters and size ratios, this sounds a little overpowered lol. This would work in an arena fighter like Power Stone, or a brawler fighter like Smash Bros, but in a sidescrolling fighter, this has a little too much utility, lol.
I can see the exploding nut as an escape/chase mechanic in like Smash Bros, but in this kind of game, you're being propelled higher to...do an additional aerial attack...? But in a game like SF, Snake (which this mechanic sounds like) would seem out of place and probably broken, as he'd encourage a dash-in, lay mine, dash-around until enemy trips it kind of mechanic.
...

I dunno Kosheh, characters who rely on traps is not exactly unheard of in 2-D fighters (Rachel Alucard and Mu-12 in Blazblue, Hisui in Melty Blood, Alice Margatroid in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and Mononobe no Futo in Hopeless Masquerade, just to name a few). I mean, just because it's a traditional-style fighter doesn't mean everyone has to be a shoto. In fact, since the cast is so varied and wacky, I'd imagine unique moves are to be expected. Of course, balancing these sorts of moves could be tricky, but I doubt it's impossible to make them fair with the right amount of delay and damage output.
Okay you got me ):

The examples you provided (namely Alice and Hisui) (I assume you're also referring to things like Carl Clover in Blazblue, too) uhh, most of those are set to detonate on command/button press, so there is some strategy still to setting up said traps and then executing it. The nuts, on the other hand were to explode on contact, as well as stay on the ground. Neither sounds that bad in a brawler where you have other platforms to jump to, or a 3D arena fighter where you can just walk around them, but in a 2D plane fighter you're literally forcing the enemy to jump over each nut in order to reach Midi - and you're encouraging a hard turtling style of gameplay.

I'm sure you all know how fun it is to play against someone who turtles the entire match.

Of course you want to avoid movesets to be all shotos, but when the characters have such basic movesets to begin with, I'd assume that kind of utility is kind of OP

...then again, if I recall most of those games also have high combo counts and aerial raves where the trap-style moveset assists in juggling...which idk if we have those kind of mechanics in TFR :I

Starsock is correct but if you want to know whether a midnight moe is good or not just ask me since it's based off of me anyway

@Kosheh; I think you overlooked the part where only one nut can be planted at a time. Also, the move has six frames instead of the average four, so it takes longer to complete, thus easier to counter, and it's only effective if the user manages to get it in the middle of the ring. I get how bomb jumping would be pointless in a game like this, but to keep from overpowering the move, it could trade power for launch height.

My character isn't very physically strong, so he depends on ranged attacks. His physical attacks are fast and light, with the exception of his back kick, which takes longer to execute because he has to rear back on his tail, then kick with both legs. If you still feel a mine is OP, maybe it could have a time limit, and the opponent would have a choice: fire ranged attacks until it goes off on its own, or try to jump it.

@Vipershark; who are some characters you'd suggest? I watch very little anime, so the only one I can think of would be Tomo from Azumanga Daioh, but that would just put me in a generic schoolgirl uniform, and no one would be able to make the connection.

So, regarding stages, what should the resolution be? And what are the limitations on moving/animated set pieces?

Oh, also, can we have voice stings? Like win , lose, attack, hit, things like that?

I like Tomo a lot so you can use her if nobody else has yet.

Iocus made a suggestion in your other thread that I liked though:

Come to think of it, I hardly watch anime either. Considering my character is Nintendo themed, (in case one couldn't tell) that may make picking a fitting transformation difficult. Blank

Oh, and here's my ducking animation

now that Hyperdimension Neptunia has an anime
maybe you could cosplay Blanc / White Heart...?

iirc there was also another anime that was about console wars between nintendo and sega (and contained adaptations of their characters), but I can't remember what it was called
