I, of course, would have to disagree. If we were to judge the Smash series based on the amount of joy it brought me, Brawl is still king. That game was so satisfying in terms of new content it brought to the series. The newcomers were amazing as was the new music, new modes, items, assists, Final Smashes!

As for this Smash, no other game has dissapointed me and tormented me more. This is by far the worst Smash in that regard. It would constantly bring my hopes up only to crush them down. Every time.

Sure. If you only see Smash as a game, something fun to play, then fine... it's a good game. But I know Smash is something far more important and far more HORRIBLE than that.

This game has become Nintendo's face in a way. To newcomers of the Nintendo world, or just normal casual folks who don't really know that much. This is the game that shows them what Nintendo is all about. It is also the game that can make or break franchises, build fandoms, create icons.

A whole generation is going to grow up playing this game. They'll see it's roster and that will leave a powerful impression on them. How these franchises are represented is very very important. And some franchises were treated like pure shit. Meanwhile other got way WAY WAY more than they should have.

Quote:Yeah sure there are a few things that I missed from past games but with the DLC and all it's starting to make up for those disappointments

If all the DLC is going to do so far is bring back veterans and add newcomer who really didn't need to be there than the DLC is doing a really shitty job.

I can see it now, the DLC Ballot result are in... and the winner is... WOLF! Oh don't worry, Sakurai had a surprise newcomer for everyone, MICAIAH!

Fuck this game, fuck Sakurai. I've never had a more miserable time.

Go ahead TSR, give me hell for my opinions! I've already experienced hell, it's this game!

I'm sorry about that. I just love Nintendo and its characters so much. Like my children. I want to see them treated right.

I'd be ecstatic if Micaiah was a newcomer.

Anyways, the only disappointment in Smash 4 for me has been the single player content, or rather... the not having single player content. I don't even need a story mode or a proper adventure mode, but more content along the lines of Break the Targets and Board the Platforms. They could even roll Race to the Finish in with the Adventure stages to give us more variety that way as well.

^ This.

And also, the single player content that we DO have is frankly kind of disappointing.

The "Classic" mode in the Wii U version is frankly just not fun for a variety of reasons; "Master Orders" is literally just Events Mode with a rule randomizer; "Target Blast" is not nearly as interesting as the old school "Break the Targets" ... especially since it's given to us alongside "Home-Run Contest" which functions extremely similarly; and nobody really seems to give a crap about character customization. It also has nothing resembling an Adventure Mode in the slightest, not even an overly simplistic one. Plus there's "Smash Tour" which can honestly go f*ck itself forever whether it's played single or multiplayer; it's just not fun.

The 3DS version I actually like better than the Wii U one if simply because the single player options are more consistently fun to play. The Classic Mode is WAAAY better and Smash Run is a ball to play even on your lonesome.

That said, when it comes to claiming what Smash is the "best" game, I think it has a lot to do with what you mean when you ask that question.

I think from a technical standpoint, Smash 4 is indeed the "best" Smash; it has the best cast of fighters, best physics, best balancing, et cetera et cetera. If I was choosing a game just based on which one I want to play competitively with friends, or which one I would use for tourney purposes, I would choose this one.

But if I were to choose which game I thought was best just based on my own personal bias, I would probably honestly go with Brawl. Despite its "issues" with the floatiness et cetera, it is the one Smash generation that has the most content that I actually want to play. EVERYTHING in that game I want to play; a decent Classic Mode, an ambitious (yet not very respected) Adventure Mode, Boss Rush battles (not to mention the existence of classic game bosses at all), Smash the Targets, even that underrespected coin-shooting minigame was pretty fun.

Unlike Smash 4 where the majority of the content the game offers is simply "meh" to me. Honestly, when it comes to the Wii U version at least, I sort of feel like I wasted my money a bit. I paid sixty dollars for this game that I'm playing maybe 30% of what it actually has to offer.

I mean Smash 4 is okay I guess. It's not really my cup of tea. Defensive options are just too good in the game and I like combos in my Smash games. I like advanced tech. I mean the game has less AT than Brawl, which was watered down on purpose. It's all too slow for me. Going by gameplay, Smash 64 is the best Smash. The neutral is pretty much a mind game and after that first hit holy shit does it pick up

Smash 4 has the most content that matters, Brawl was awful but had better SP content.

Melee and especially 64 had the most exciting high-level gameplay. I'd say 64 even moreso because all the intended mechanics work perfectly. My dream is one day we'll get patch notes (lol) with this:
-Tripled shield stun
-End lag on rolling increased
-End lag on spot-dodging increased
-End lag on air-dodging increased
-Grabs have more priority again, never clash/lose (SSB64, SSBM, SSBB)
-Aerial landing lag halved with timed shield-press
-Hit-stun increased to accommodate higher gravity

Aaah~ But a pipedream~ If this were done I'd probably drop all other Smash games in terms of favoritism

Quote:Hello everyone, I will cut right to the nitty gritty. Ryu has some of THE BEST options in the game, and is considered already to be top 5.
PROS: Tons of power, Pretty decent speed, Pretty good recovery, AERIAL DASHING!?, Can down throw combo, A projectile with 2 variants, A kill move (Shoryuken inputted) that true combos from his down tilt, on hit cancelling ability (will be explained). The ability to parry up to 1 attack (any smash attack for example that is 1 hit) using his down B (Focus Attack) and counter attack with an attack which causes Crumple status (a status from Street Fighter 4 which causes opponents to fall to their knees, and then down on their face, you can combo off of this),

CONS: Not easy to pick up and play at all, Requires learning to use his inputs, Crucial to LEARN TO USE HIS INPUTS, I cannot stress this enough, Slow smash attacks, Not the best recovery, Really difficult to learn to utilize his light and heavy system (pressing down tilt makes you do a simple foot slide, holding it makes you do a heavy foot trip which knocks people into the air and lets you On Hit Cancel).
OKAY, so, now that that's out of the way...

Ryu has a system from Street Fighter called "OHC" or "On Hit Cancel" which basically lets him cancel his up tilt or down tilt (heavy and light down tilt, light up tilt only) into any of his B special attacks, or inputted attacks. This system is REALLY unique, and lets him have some of the best kill options in the game if you master using his inputs. (Down tilt (LIGHT) to inputted Shoryuken can kill at earliest of 80%) for example.
This is a good system to learn to use if you wish to use Ryu properly.
His next system, which hails from Street Fighter 4, is his Focus Attack and Focus Attack Dash Cancel (or FADC as we call it in the SF4 community.)

Basically, his down B is a Focus Attack, he takes a stance, and charges up to 3 levels of Focus. Level 1 has no hitstun on the opponent for you to combo off of, and is only good for getting someone off of you or a quick punish for a smash attack someone did (if it is 1 hit.) The Focus Attack can parry up to [1] attack (After that, you'll be knocked out of Focus) and it's REALLY good for punishing people who use lots of dash attacks or projectiles or smashes. Level 2 of Focus is pretty good, has a decent amount of hit stun, but still not a lot of time for you to combo off of. Level 3 Focus has the best hitstun amount possible, and tons of combo potential off of it, even kill set ups!

Now, FADC (Focus Attack Dash Cancelling) is when you use Down B, and IMMEDIATELY dash (left, left or right, right) during the Focus. It can be done while airborne to get a sort of "air evade" or "air glide" or even "air dash" effect. You can act out of a FADC when airborne REALLY quickly, allowing you to FADC, avoid an attack while air borne, and go into an inputted Shoryuken or Tatsumaki or Hadouken (Shakunetsu Hadouken, Red Fireball). You can also go into any of his other aerials, the possibilities of using FADC is ENDLESS. You should also be using FADC when landing a Focus Attack level 2 or higher. When you land the punch (ONLY when landing it), Ryu can FADC out of the animation toward the opponent into any attack you please. I recommend an inputted Shoryuken or an up smash fully charged if it's a level 3 Focus.

Well, that is all I wanted to give in this guide, and if you have any more questions, please ask me. I used to be an avid SF4 player!

I think Ryu will be the most interesting character to watch at high level in the game, he's looking to be one of the best characters if mastered, actually...

Downloaded Ryu today, and I really enjoyed testing him out. Wonder if Sega and Namco plan to add their fighting game characters too.

With my second go at Miiverse drawings, I did this after playing.  Tongue

I would take Koopaul more seriously, but Smash 4 is a really solid game. Like, even I, someone that can't enjoy Melee, still respect that game (after all it was a really big game, and it is undeniably a milestone in Nintendo's history).

I don't know but 'suffering' and 'hell' because of a digital game is really shallow. Games should never be this important to you - of course I say 'this game is poop' and 'eat dirt' sometimes but it's never seriously. Like, really? Am I going to insult people... over a game? kek

Can't you see how a landmark this game is? I literally can play as Sonic, pummeling Mario and Shulk while dodging Ryu's Hadouken and Megaman's Leaf Shields, all of this while eating fruits thrown by Isabelle and being buffeted by Meowth's Pay Day. It's our 2000's sprite comic dream come true - I think we should be more grateful, not because of its gameplay alone, but the whole work and concept behind it.

Basically, it's really childish to say the game is shit because it would not cater to your really niche tastes. It's ok to dislike a couple things or not enjoying he game at all, but to expect the game to be tailored for you and only you is literally asking to be disappointed lol

seriously.

I feel like I've said this before, but if you told me when I was 10 that in the future I could reflect Ryu's Hadoken's with Mario's cape while Sonic is charging a spindash and Pacman's choosing a fruit to throw at me, all while Megaman's springing back onstage using Rush to do so (because there's 5-player play now!) in a fighting game called Super Smash Brothers, I'd probably actually tell you "you're full of shit, go away you weird old man", even though I was the most naive kid who wouldn't say a single hurtful thing )':

but yeah, it'd be my 90's childhood dreams fully realized into something beautiful.
my only question, though would be "where's crash bandicoot" (which you'd be free to say "well, activision bought him and now he's in trademark hell but it's not his fault" and i'd totally understand)

Koopaul, I think you'd like the Persona games
You should play them (namely 4, then work backwards)
they're very nice, very stylistically done, and the fourth one has like a million spinoffs due to how popular it is...but it's still niche!!!!
but every little dream you have and hope for in the game is never dashed. just built upon

also, you get a girlfriend :0)

Even I, as much as I like Melee, can't denounce Smash 4. It'd just be a silly boldfaced lie.
My problems are in it's over-defensive mechanics, the actual other stuff is all fine to me.

first of all lol at koopaul

second; damn this dlc makes is fun. ness is my main, and lucas always was the perfect alternate plan if ness didn't work. so i'm really glad he's back, and i'm planning to main him this time around again and put a little more effort into it this time.

roy feels great. i used to be very excited for lucina last year, but besides that i really like her as a character; i just don't use her enough to be truly good with her. roy could finally be my FE character. oh yeah there's also robin but it's funny to have a counter

ryu is amazing, i still need to get good with him and he's pretty difficult. but man he's such a fun addition. also his stage is PERFECT. it's everything i actually wanted to have for Takamaru, but Ryu bringing it along is also fine... except i still want takamaru playable.
