Sonic 2006 remake.Need help collecting the models
#1
Hello People. I have an idea for a project the VG resource could take part in. I am attempting to correct the mistakes of 2006's Sonic the hedgehog by making a remake of the game. But I can't do it alone. I'm having a hard time finding all the models. I need help with collecting all the models from the game and rigs of the models. This would have to be a non-profit project though, so it would be something to do just for fun. If you could help with finding the models, I'll do the best I can to try and complete this project. I can't make any promises though. So if you don't want to help, cool. If you can get the models, I greatly appreciate it. Please post the models in the Models Resource or leave a link. Thank you.

That's cool and all, but what you're asking for is a pretty huge request.

Not only would ripping every single model from the game be a massive undertaking, completely remaking the game would take a huge team. What are you contributing to the project? Anyone can be the idea guy, do you have the abilities to take it further? Would you be willing to help rip the models? Can you program it? If you're looking for people to help you out, you need to be more upfront and descriptive about the project itself and what you can offer, because that's a lot of work to put into something and get nothing in return.

Think of it as an investment. Is your project worth investing so much time and effort into?

Yyyyyyeah, this. Sonic '06 had an entire team working on it. Are you going to hire a whole team to work on it, or find enough people on the Internet to unanimously agree "Yes, Sonic '06 was bad and we really need to remake it"

just like, play around in unity with some existing models and don't worry about remaking '06

Make something cool and original

hey, don't get like that. Very Sad

I mean, there's like a gazillion different things you have to consider here. Like, here's basically what you're suggesting:

- Obtain all the assets from Sonic '06: textures, models, dialogue, scripts, audio, etc.
- Write the engine from scratch to resemble an existing product
- Once it's done and so much done, distribute it for free and everyone will applaud you and your team for it.

Now, that's...well, for one thing, that's not legal. And in the end, what you're proposing actually hurts SEGA!! And that'd be even worse!!
Copyright law prohibits you from doing something like that. (taking the game, scenario, programming and assets and passing it off as your team's work)
Even though you're not selling it for a profit, SEGA still wishes to protect their assets and the things they own. Basically:

- SEGA made Sonic '06 and it's a flaming tured
- You're proposing remaking the game
- The new game is a nonprofit and distributed to the masses
- SEGA makes no money because who wants to play a glitchy game when we have The New, Perfect Version of Sonic '06 And Here It Is, Completely Free

Remember when SEGA made the Dreamcast, and you could burn the games onto CDs, thus not having to pay for any of your games? Remember how much money SEGA lost because they sold the consoles at a loss and then no one was buying the software? Remember how they pulled the plug on that console because it couldn't keep up with the other technology on the market and SEGA couldn't afford to make a new console?

Yeah it's like that but with a game.

I'd suggest getting into like modeling or something, and making your own Cool, Neat Creations - and once you've got something neat, you could do things with it - like use those assets in a game, or find out how to port the model into an existing PC game, so you have your own, cool-ass mod that you can credit as your own and everyone will like and enjoy Cutec

"But what about fangames Kosheh!!"

well that's a grey area? maybe

Well you're writing the coding yourself and making original scenarios and mechanics, so like it's a little better and somewhat more ethical too. While you're not using your own assets, you're still learning the skeleton of it all to make cooler, better work in the future.

Here's an idea: Instead of killing yourself trying to recreate an XBOX game, why not obtain easier-to-find things (like sprites of Sonic and things made by fans, etc.) and make a 2D side-scrolling fangame that takes place in the same universe as '06, possibly tying the plotholes and whatnot together - and it's still actually mostly original and you're taking on a task that one guy can handle easily all on his own (and maybe a few pals too) :0)

You can make your own, but there's probably loads of Sonic 2 HD games out there.

What about Sonic the useful engine HD?

Na he's referring to the Sonic 2 HD project. That's a little different because it's a simpler game to make and redo - but you do see how long the project is taking, right? Also, S2HD Remix is pretty much rewritten from the ground up - like, completely rewritten, resprited and remixed.

You're trying to get the same assets and models used in Sonic 2006. That's...not legal. You're trying to make the game using too many assets. :/

Talking over with a friend about this, he kinda made a good point - Sonic 2 is a lot simpler to write, code and debug. Like, you need to have a bunch of playtesters to debug all that code. All that code written for Sonic '06. That's a lot of code. That's a lot of glitches. That's a lot of trying to fix somebody else's mistakes. And honestly, it's gonna be a big bag of just not plain fun.

I planned to do this over a loooonng time right from the start.I know it is going to take a long time.I know I would have to rewrite the script from the ground up.I want to make this a long project because I want to learn from this.I want to get into the programming career, so what is the best way to learn?Work with a game.I know people think I can't do it.At some points, I think so too.But the way I see this is a learning experience.I can find out what I need to fix on my end and what I'm proficient at. If you think I can't do it, that ok.Its your opinion. But I'm not gonna let that stop me. I'll do what I can on my own in that case.

Wait...how is that illegal?

it is illegal because you are using an asset that is not made by yourself. Even if you don't make any profit out of this, trying to 'one up' an official game will hurt the original's sales and this is harmful for the company.

If you are so hellbent on this though, then work on it yourself - and only make a thread when you have something complete. We really dislike "idea guy topics" over here, and this is even written in the rules.
