Valo's Various Pixels

Even though the new design conflicts with the lead's creative vision, sometimes the artist might know what's best for them.

Also to note, when Keiji Inafune was designing characters for older systems he always made sure the design translated to a clean and recognizable sprite. The white X would work on a 32-bit sprite or 3D model, but its hard to make out in this resolution.

i'm going to have to argue against your point on the hands, being that they're just black blobs.

I'm going to have to second Valo here on the hands. To be blunt... I'm having trouble recognizing the existence of hands on gors' edit. If I didn't know the character was supposed to have hands I would think he didn't have them.

I like gors' edits to the head though, and the body looks a lot cleaner, if... well rather dull. Which in my opinion proves SOMETHING needs to be done about the torso and it's details, but I'm not sure "removing" it was the answer.
I'm indifferent towards the boot changes.

he's referring to the back hand (which i indeed took more time to work on than the front hand). In yours, there is nothing that suggests a hand. In mine, there's at least the shape of a thumb and an index, which even if it's pure black, increases readability tenfold.

its ok if you didn't like the sprite edit at all though, as I said it was just a 'test' more than a 'complete overhaul'

I think the readability is debatable. what would you suggest for the chest thats not has cluttered as an x and not as barren as nothing?

In my opinion you made it more handshaped at the cost of making it less readable that there are actual hands there.

It's a case of a "blob where the hand is" (valo's version) vs. "I have to take a close look to make out there's hands there even though they are hand shaped"(gors' version)

In short both have different readability issues.

i suggest 'plate' designs, like this one i just did

straight lines are easier to render (it will not require too much AA dots) and will shape out the sprite better imo.

I really dont have a purpose for these, just for fun really. I tried to stick to nes color limitations on the sprites, but the mugs i kinda gave up on that halfway through haha. I keep updating this as I add more.

Excellent work so far. These would be right at home in a Mega Man game and the tiny anatomy improvements on the gloves and boots makes these look better than the main series sprites.

My only complaint is that the cheeks don't look quite right in your mugshots. If you rounded out and smoothed the cheeks a bit, I think they'd look a little better.

Never played Megaman but still find these sprites awesome...that's one way you know you've done something right : )

You know those frames where the head turns away and it shows that blue bit on the back of the helmet? It just strikes me as really abrupt as there is no transition unlike the rest of the sprites. The other frames are fine, but the head turns and suddenly bam there is a pale blue patch and bam its gone. Maybe it isn't as obvious to some people but that light-dark contrast really stands out for me when you see it animated.

Seeing how you've done it, maybe the best way is to just lower the amount of that pale area showing.

I'll see if i can work on a smoother transition then.

[Image: Gs4xuKD.png]I need to completely redo the boots. But the cropped version should make a decent weapon get screen, so I'll call it a night for today.

Nice work...

hard to crit those because they are so great...if I had to be nitpicky maybe two of the highlight dots could be rounded, the triangular-shaped one on the chestplate and the one on the blue of the helmet. May not be your style though so don't feel forced to listen : ) I know some people that prefer highlights that follow the shape...
